SPEAKER_08

Hello and welcome to the five hundred and sixty-first edition of the Fallout feed. I am Andrew, joined by a flock of my favorite Fallout folks. Tonight I've got Ray. What's up, Ray? Hello, hello. And also Jess. What's going on, Jess?

SPEAKER_16

Hey Andrew. Dr. Pepper and Chill tonight.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, gonna pop open a cool Dr. Pepper. Anybody see our fun little chat Calm Horizons and I were doing this morning at fucking 5 30 in the morning? I was I was scrolling back through your Discord conversation yesterday, Jess. You said something about I don't remember what your comment was, something about Dr. Pepper. You know, because that's pretty much always a constant in our group. And I just thought, wait a second, is there a Dr. Nuka Cola? Like, like does did they have like a version of everything? Plus Right.

SPEAKER_16

And we don't really have an equivalent.

SPEAKER_08

Is there Nuca Cola? And then you know, then we're all bouncing ideas off of what that thing would be called.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I saw some of it this morning. I got okay, a couple of my favorites. You got what Dr. Half-Life, Dr. Isotope?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. I th my favorite one was I think Dr. Doctor.

SPEAKER_12

Dr. Doctor. Give me the news. I love it. That's a good one.

SPEAKER_08

I thought I just thought that sounded appropriate.

SPEAKER_16

Lisa Dr. Proton, too, from the Big Bang theory. Dr.

SPEAKER_08

Proton. Yeah. Who was um Bob Newhart or something?

SPEAKER_16

Classic. Yeah, no, it totally was. Totally was. I mean, Sunset Sasparilla. I know it's a sarsaparilla, but it's got that flavors and spices that might make it a little bit the Dr. Pepper tip. You know, snooker gold's Coke, but I don't know.

SPEAKER_08

I was associated. I know it's not the same thing as root beer, but it's I always associate it with root beer, birch beer. That's that sort of you know. Yeah, the wood beer. Yeah. Oh my god, you ever had ginger beer? Oof, I thought it was gonna be like ginger ale. Oh my god. Kicked my ass.

SPEAKER_16

I love ginger beer, nice and spicy, Jamaican style. So good. I actually got some in the fridge right now. Use it to uh you mix it with a little pineapple, a little rum, make it a good drink.

SPEAKER_08

Use it to cleat. All right. Tonight on the show, y'all. Um it sounds like we've got a little bit of an iguana bits hubbub, news-wise, in our world going on. But my ear has not been to the ground, so I'm gonna let Jess fill us in on that here in a little while. But we got a little bit of gameplay to get off to on the top of the show, and we are continuing our vault talk, our continued viewing of the Fallout TV show. This week we are moving on to season two, episode two. So don't we just go ahead and roll right into everything so whoever's getting into and say, hey, Ray, did you get a chance to play the video games this week, sir? I did play a little bit of video game. Did you video game? Singular.

SPEAKER_07

So I spent a lot of time in Star Wars. It was I had a desire to do try out their revised uh mantis quest.

SPEAKER_08

Meaning the original quest was a mantis quest, and they have they've redone it into a Mandalorian quest. And remind me what the Mantis was in Starfield.

SPEAKER_07

The Mantis was the uh the Batman of Starfield. Oh, oh, oh, oh, okay. She struck fear in the hearts of pirates and the spacers. Where'd she live? Of course, no one knows. Secret Lair. And she had left it to her son, who never really wanted to have anything to do with his weird mom, because she was a really, you know, harsh taskmaster.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I can only imagine.

SPEAKER_07

And as he was going through, he succumbed to the traps, so he was not found worthy. But uh, so they redid it to be a Mandalorian quest, and uh found out at the end that it was a Twilight Mandalorian because the helmet has uh two big uh shielded uh protuberant.

SPEAKER_16

Wait, when you put on the helmet now, you've got a you have like fake head things, head tentacles.

SPEAKER_08

Yep. I just said something about Twilight. I thought you were gonna be a sparkly vampire.

SPEAKER_16

That's what I heard at first, too. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_07

Um so so the the one thing I was really curious about is so it required you to be at least level I think 75 for the quest to kick off, which seemed really high, especially with as slow as you level in this game.

SPEAKER_08

I was gonna say they don't you level super slowly in comparison to Fallout 4, which you already leveled super slowly in comparison to Skyrim.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, in Starfield, you if you want to super level, then you set up a vessel uh mining facility, and you mine a ton of aluminum and uh iron and you make a million adaptive frames and you get a million XP. Oh but they took that away in uh Genesis. Quit exploiting so you can't uh you can't run up your levels that way, which is all fine and good, unless you need to get to level 75. So I had gotten to about level 35. Um, at that point I had already collected enough bescar ingots to craft my own elite Mandalorian armor.

SPEAKER_08

They don't need to get to level 75 then, right?

SPEAKER_07

No. Um, but I wanted to do this quest, so of course I popped open the console and uh player dot set level space 75. 76 for good measure. And uh the next challenge was to go find some spacers because they're not spacers in this game. So I did I finally found some some bad guys to uh to take out and got the uh the data pad from them and started the quest and went through and it's it's an interesting quest. They're it's kind of like three pieces weaved together. It's called the uh hidden chain, uh which I'm sure has some you know Star Wars significance to it. But uh Hidden Chain. It was basically probably something from the books. Somebody stranded on the planet, his friends couldn't get to him because of a massive radiation storm, and there were a bunch of you know hooligans on the planet that were trying to to take him out, and it was one against hundreds, and so he was fighting to to keep them at bay, and he finally, I guess, starved to death. And uh tough way to go. Yeah, so when you get to the end, you get his armor, and it's not as good as the one you crafted for yourself many, many levels ago. So I'm not really sure. So I do so uh on the next update, the developer posted a uh a video. I guess he's been getting a lot of flack for how hard normal mode is.

SPEAKER_08

And so he cave to the snowflakes, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Most per most prominently at the very beginning of the game. You're a gnat and everybody else is an elephant. It's just it's so hard to actually take anybody down.

SPEAKER_08

So then you fly right into his eyeball and annoy the piss out of him. Come on.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, but then he blinks and kills you. Oh, that sucks. But anyway, so they're they're kind of reworking that. So normal is more is gonna be more normal, and they're renaming the current uh difficulty level to immersive. So it'll be interesting to see. I I had started off trying to do the the constellation quest line, which has been revamped, and trying to get through that first level with the Sarah replacement in the Star Yard was brutal, just absolutely brutal.

SPEAKER_12

Because of the difficulty or something given about how she works?

SPEAKER_07

No, because everybody everybody could one-shot you. So there was, I mean, you had to make sure that no one could shoot at you.

SPEAKER_16

Um and there are no difficulty sliders or modifiers, like you've said, right? It's just the base difficulty of Genesis. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

I mean, you could go, you can get harder, or you could go to story mode. But uh yeah, this was normal, so it was a you know, it was I think it'll be a good change of the game. So that'll be in the uh 8.8.2 version, you know, which should come out not in the not too distant future. I don't think I'll change, but because I'm in a good position now.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, you don't need to do every iteration. Sometimes you gotta lock it down, not let the muffy for a little while.

SPEAKER_07

But I didn't play it this week, but I remembered after the show last week, oh yeah, that's right. I had started a Fallout London character. I had decided that I wanted to uh to play London as a cannibal. Oh, since I hadn't that was the one thing I hadn't done in in London yet.

SPEAKER_16

None of your characters yet, even though you joined the beef eaters that one time.

SPEAKER_07

Well, all I I didn't so you don't actually join the beef eaters because they're not a joinable faction.

SPEAKER_16

Oh, okay. They're very exclusive.

SPEAKER_07

But I uh I did definitely wear their clothes. So because they have really, really cool clothes.

SPEAKER_12

I mean they're snazzy, absolutely. They look like they're on a bottle of gin.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, you want to you run you you need a rough. You want that big giant ruff to look formidable, and plus it helps keep the blood from getting all over your clothes.

SPEAKER_12

If you're not out there looking like a big old dandy just or pumpkin fluffer, what are you doing? Yeah, I love that.

SPEAKER_08

The purpose of the rough is to keep blood off your clothes. Well, I mean, it is for a messy eater, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Oh, for a cable.

SPEAKER_12

Normally, probably not. I bet stuff gets stuck in there all the time.

SPEAKER_07

I did get to play around with the so there's so Beefy, the guy that runs the London Bridge, you know, that charges you 10 caps to cross the bridge. There's I've uh done his speech check a couple of times where you can, if you've got a high enough charisma, you can uh challenge him that he's running a scam. And then he'll have you take out three groups of cannibals. Well, if you're a cannibal, you can also challenge him uh in a speech check. And he'll say, Oh yeah, I can see it in your eyes. And so then you can go through and do the cannibal quest to get the London Bridge. So now my character has a London Bridge. I don't really know what I'm gonna do with it. I don't really need a a player home per se, but it's uh so the the weapon that I wanted to also try to use, I'd used before to some extent, but not really that much, is the Halbert. Um so that that's kind of fun. It's got a nice long reach to it. A pokey end and a hacky end.

SPEAKER_08

So Halliburton, is that what you said? No, Halberd. Halbird, okay. Yeah. And that's what that weird spear slash sword thing with the knife on the other end.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, it's a it's a pull axe, basically with a pokey in. So so that's been fun. And then because Jess is getting into a cyberpunk, uh well, I wanted to go check and see where my character was because I couldn't remember what I had been doing the last time I was in there. And it turns out I was doing a a Netrunner throwing knife character.

SPEAKER_16

Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_07

Throwing knives.

SPEAKER_16

I remember how much you enjoy hacking, so that makes sense. But throwing knives, really?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. So silenced pistols, or I mean, that's just so Fallout 4.

SPEAKER_16

Right, absolutely. So blasé.

SPEAKER_07

They've done a lot, and there's a whole perk tree for throwing knives and everything. So that's uh it's a fun way to go, and it's also uh very stealthy. So it fit right in. And this character had gotten to level 15 on all of his skills, so headhunter, uh, netrunner, solo, shinobi.

SPEAKER_16

He's whatever he wants to be, and right now he wants to be a knife throwing netrunner.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, so getting to level 15 on all your skills gets you a free per point for each one of them. So that's always handy. Um, but then also uh this character's level 20, but the character still hasn't left Watson and still hasn't done the pickup, the maelstrom job, hasn't uh met Meredith Stout, and hasn't done the heist.

SPEAKER_16

Amazing. So the character's just grinding in the starting region of the buttons.

SPEAKER_07

I didn't actually play any though. I just had to I just had to assess where this character was.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, absolutely.

SPEAKER_08

Do you think your um throwing knife character could also wield throwing stars? Yeah, for sure.

unknown

Sure.

SPEAKER_12

Can he wield them? Sure he can. Yes! Good one, Angie.

SPEAKER_08

All right, Ray, I had a couple questions going back to the um Star Wars Genesis. You said Bessel. Remind me what Bessel was, because that word chimed in my ear. I was like, fuck, is that the sounds like Kessel run and 12 parsecs? No, that's the Kessel run in 12 parsecs. What was Bessel?

SPEAKER_07

So Bessel is a Starfield planet or a Starfield system.

SPEAKER_08

It wasn't a Star Wars system, it was okay.

SPEAKER_07

That's the it's the location that Ray can't not build a base on every single character.

SPEAKER_16

Because there's a location. No, that's where he fights. He fights in Serpentus and he grinds out ore and levels his character on Bessel 3B.

SPEAKER_08

Grind grind bezel fights serpentus. There we go.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that's the one.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, 3B. There's an easy location to land in that gives you iron, aluminum, nickel, and cobalt.

SPEAKER_16

I call it Black Mountain because it's right next to this like tall mountain area, but you get all the resources there, you can grind them all, and it's a great place to level.

SPEAKER_08

Say those elements again.

SPEAKER_07

So aluminum, iron, nickel, and cobalt. I call it Mount Nika.

SPEAKER_08

If you had manganese, you could make batteries there. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_07

No, but you can make adaptive frames and isocentered magnets.

SPEAKER_16

So many. And if you manage to set up a vendor there, you can also sell them and then grind again.

SPEAKER_08

Make a million and get a million XP. Yep.

SPEAKER_16

It's a lot like in Sanctuary when you level up early on using building XP there for a bit.

SPEAKER_08

Also, Ray, you mentioned Best Car ingots, which implies a mine somewhere, right? Can you go mine the best car to make your armor, or how do you get the resources to make the best car Mandalorian armor?

SPEAKER_07

So you find ingots. I get it mostly from boarding ships. So it's in the uh captain's locker.

SPEAKER_08

Those those Beskar ingots are not just laying around. Uh but there's no you haven't found a mine per se or anything. No. Have you gone to the healing waters of Mandalore yet? Does that exist? Is there Mandalore, the planet of Mandalore?

SPEAKER_07

Uh there is yeah, that's where you find the Beskar Forge. Right. Which is a unique forge that allows you to forge things from your Beskar ingots.

SPEAKER_08

You get to interact with an armorer there? Is there an NPC there? No. No. Okay. It's just just the forge. The forge in the show looks really fucking cool.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Neat. Alright, um, let's see. I was also thinking, you mentioned a radiation cloud. So that like hindered their pathway or something. I don't remember radiation ever being a concern in Star Wars at all, ever. Then that made me think, how the fuck do they power their starships?

SPEAKER_16

Magic.

SPEAKER_08

Are they nuclear powered? Are they are they nuclear-powered starships? Yeah, they're they're powered with hyperdrive fuel.

SPEAKER_07

Huge incorrect.

SPEAKER_08

That's what you might that's what you This is not something they mine and refine or something, you don't think.

SPEAKER_07

It is in the game. Oh, it is. Yeah. I mean technically the mechanics were not implemented in the original Starfield, I would imagine, for ease of gameplay. It uh it's not required now. You just have to be you just have to have you have a distance that you can travel with your ship. And yeah, so you have to do jumps, so you can't just travel from one end of the galaxy to the other. Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

So I don't know why they don't just use dilithium. I'm sure they could find some Ferengi willing to trade.

SPEAKER_08

Well, it's just funny because you know, I never really thought about how they fuel any of their starships, and then like with how many fucking crazy starship chases and battles and stuff there are, there's never been that I can recall the super dramatic scene of, oh, I'm running out of gas. I need to get to a fuel station and get refueled.

SPEAKER_16

Everybody in Star Wars thinks about that stuff. That's why it's space fantasy and not really as science fiction as you would think. You just you stand near a cool reactor, it's got red and blue lights, it goes rum, rum. And you somehow don't be like, yeah, it works. Uh-huh. Exactly.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, the dose from that radiation over time, that person would their hair fall out and they'd die. Alright, let's see. I had one more note, but I can't even read read my handwriting. The forensics of oh, you're in cyberpunk, you have these throwing knives as your weapon. Does anyone ever care when they find like dead bodies and stuff? Like, does anyone ever be like, oh hey, there's this knife? Oh, now we have fingerprints, let's go chase this person, try to figure it out. Is there like are there ever like cops on your tail from finding dead bodies and stuff? Like, has do they ever has anyone ever added that aspect to it?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, so Cyberpunk does have that. That's so cool.

SPEAKER_08

That's very neat.

SPEAKER_07

So if you end up injuring a civilian, then the police will chase you. So if you you know run him over with your car or fire a shotgun, that's usually when I get in trouble. Is you'll shoot a shotgun at somebody, but on the other side of them is a civilian, and you know, they'll take a couple of pelvis. Yeah. And uh next thing you know, the the cops are chasing you.

SPEAKER_08

Are you having a grouse or something, Ray? Put put a fucking slug in that thing, man. Come on.

SPEAKER_07

Um, but uh with throwing knives, well, actually with anything, if you have a stealth kill, if somebody patrolling an area, you know, a fellow bad guy comes across one of his dead friends, then he's alerted and looking around and trying to see. And if you hit somebody and you don't kill them, then they have a general idea of where you're at. They just kind of stand there and look at the knife and say, okay, it's pointing up there. And so they start shooting.

SPEAKER_08

That's fun.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, cool.

SPEAKER_08

That's interesting that they add to that. Good.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, so that so both of those are in there. So you can definitely get chased by the cops, and if you injure a civilian and the bad guys will notice if one of their buddies drop.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. As they should if they're a good friend. True that. Ray, any other uh gameplay you would like to talk about? No, that pretty much covers it. All right. Well, let's check in with Jess. Who she got into this week. Jess, you have a chance playing Vidge games?

SPEAKER_16

You know, I I don't really want to talk video games so much. I just want to talk the bits. Do you want to talk about what you're playing first?

SPEAKER_08

Or yeah, hang on just a second. So, my gameplay this week. I played a lot of um Winterburrow. I think Jess may have mentioned this game a long time ago on the on the show. But I noticed it was on sale on the Switch a couple weeks ago, so I picked that up. Just because I I wasn't feeling adventure game. I was like looking for you know the um Animal Crossing, uh that sort of that sort of thing, like building and resources and gathering stuff. And I didn't want any sort of a big change. So I I saw the you know the winter burrow, and I thought, oh wow, that looks really cute. I'd watch the little preview on the you know the trailer on the Switch, the marketplace app there. So I was like looking at all that, and the the art style is very cool, and it has a real nice cartoony look, but with like a thick black outline, which is a neat style that I like a lot.

SPEAKER_16

It's really cute for those wondering what it is. It's it's kind of a cozy mouse survival game. It's a little bit survival and a little bit Stardy Valley, but it's more on the survival side.

SPEAKER_08

You've got to gather enough stuff to survive and you know keep your burrow going for the winter, and that's um it eventually does get to some sort of um conflict, I believe, but I'm having so much fun with the gathering and the building of different recipes and exploring that stuff that I've I've kind of been ignoring the uh the big conflict of the game. It's like, oh boom, big event, and I'm like, meh, we'll deal with that later. So an owl has come and stolen my aunt, and that's the big dramatic event. And if we know anything about owls, they just love to have a mouse over, let them sit sit in the apartment that have them stop by for dinner, you know? Stop by for dinner. So there's lots of time. I don't I don't have to rush to to rescue Auntie. I can build my kindling and make my little crackers.

SPEAKER_16

Sorry, but to quote the ghoul from last week, he's already dead.

SPEAKER_08

He already did.

SPEAKER_16

He already did.

SPEAKER_08

But yeah, you know, it's just so cute because you like you run into this this toad who's a stonemason. You know, you run onto these different little animals, and it's just very, very cute. And your big enemies are like little beetles running around, which you chop up with your like your little stone axe that you made, and then you roast the beetles for your energy. But the big enemy in the game is the cold. It's like a countdown each time you leave your burrow, and then like you'll start seeing the frost, like an Argonian of Skyrim crystallize and creep in on your screen until it totally whites out, and then you it says, You passed out, and then you wake up in your burrow again. I'm like, wait a second, if I passed out, just freeze to death, how to wake up in my burrow again. But that's how they you know they reset. And if you if you don't make it back in time, so it's just basically a fight against the cold, you make it a little bit. And you make wool clothing, you you upgrade your clothing, you make better food, that sort of stuff. So that's what I've really been into. I've been ignoring the conflict part and just sort of like running around collecting stuff, making more wool yarn. I don't know.

SPEAKER_07

So, you know, but do you wear a rat skin coat or yeah, that sounds great.

SPEAKER_08

I'd put that on. A mouse would wear totally wear a rat for a trophy more than anything.

SPEAKER_16

Absolutely. I think Rando's playing too. I think he was showing he needed a cute little mouse hat.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, and we get some snowshoes and everything. It's very cute. Other than that, last week I sort of set that aside, and this week I've been playing Super Mario World, the one for the Super Nintendo. I've been uh slowly making my way through that. I just beat Castle Number Three last night and uh starting into World Four. Um, it's just one of my all-time favorite side scrolling games. It's lovely. I love the the Yoshi and the Super Cape and all the just sort of new additions that they put into that add you know that particular version of the game, I think, is really well done for a side-scrolling Mario game. Really like that one. So I've been messing around with that a lot the last week. But other than that, yeah, that's all my gameplay that I've been getting into. So you want to get into the bits? See how it's beautiful. I'm a little excited to see what we're champing at. The uh all the all the drama has evidently come to a head. Let's get into it.

SPEAKER_01

Jessica to the office, please. Jessica to the office. Your iguana bits are ready. Please come pick them up.

SPEAKER_16

Literally chomping at the vit, Andrew. Good reference. But it's not just it's not just bits tonight. It's not just one iguana. We've got four or five iguanas. We've got an entire human-size worth of iguana bits tonight. Not that anyone would ever use humans as iguanas, of course. Totally gross.

SPEAKER_08

Ray is a beef eater now, so that's true.

SPEAKER_16

I gotta wonder, I is a rough more like a cone for cannibals? Like, you know how you put a cone on a dog, you don't want them, you know, messing with stuff? Maybe maybe the rough kind of keeps you from being able to get in there. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Stay away.

SPEAKER_07

Don't bite me. Bite me down at all. I mean, it it limits how deep you can go into the cavity, but it's still not, it's not gonna, it doesn't cover your mouth.

SPEAKER_16

You must maintain at least two ruffles distance apart.

SPEAKER_07

It's it's not the mask from Silence of the Labs.

SPEAKER_16

So tonight for the bits, we are focusing on just one thing and one thing alone.

SPEAKER_07

Now, if I were to pull the end of Bethesda as we know it.

SPEAKER_09

Taboom.

SPEAKER_16

And I feel fine, Ray. And I feel fine. Absolutely. So actually, I've I will quickly get out of the way. There is calendar stuff happening. Right now, it is currently the 17th of July when we're recording this, about to be the 18th. And this coming Tuesday, the summer saw cop mini season starts. So another put on an outfit and get extra stuff on the chore board. Mini season. Good times. And I imagine for the sock hop, you know, there's gonna be cute outfits. I mean, obviously some of us will have poodle skirt and tops, but maybe for the guys, they'll do like a nice suit. I don't know. We will see.

SPEAKER_08

I was gonna say zoot suit, but that's not right. That's that's a few decades before.

SPEAKER_16

Uh yeah, a few decades early, but still, could look good. Or maybe like a nice little greaser loot look for the sock cop. That would be fun. But so that's what's coming up on the season. That's all we really got for July until the end when we're gonna be getting Foshnacht coming back.

unknown

Woo!

SPEAKER_16

Get ready to march, y'all.

SPEAKER_08

So someone had a uh everybody loves those summer donuts. A fire barrel for your berets, Jess. That's just rude.

SPEAKER_16

Oh my god. Muffin humping son of a motherless goat. Okay, so there's this camp that I apologize, that Rando shared in the Fallout channel, and basically it said, burn your berets here in big letters on a camp. And a nice little billboard and an arrow pointing to fire barrel. Seriously. A beret incineration center.

SPEAKER_07

Did you nuke them?

SPEAKER_16

No, but that doesn't sound like a bad idea to deserve it. No, but seriously, like some people just don't appreciate good headwear or style or fashion or anything worthwhile. But also hashing it out, I realized that maybe they're just increasing the value of my beret collection, considering I have hundreds of them. I can corner the market, total beret domination. As people give in to their base urges and blow up and burn their berets like people blow up cars, it could happen.

SPEAKER_08

What's those berets?

SPEAKER_16

They are the best. Kaboom! But that's not what we're here to talk about tonight. No, those aren't the bits that y'all are here for. Here's the real bits. So today, on the day of our Todd, July 17th, 2026, Bethesda tweeted and posted from multiple social accounts a note from Bethesda Game Studios. Now I'm gonna read some of this.

SPEAKER_07

Did it start off with the rumors of our death are greatly exaggerated?

SPEAKER_16

It might as well have. It came with pretty pictures.

SPEAKER_08

It was just a note with a handprint that said, we know.

SPEAKER_16

We know. Amazing. Yeah, no, they said, Hey, you flock of Fallout folks, listen up. No, here's what they said. We love making these worlds as much as you love playing in them. Today we want to share what's next for Bethesda Game Studios and what you can expect from us in the years ahead. I'll stop there for a second to say what this is is a total roadmap. Now, most people listening have probably already seen articles, posts, people talking about it, lots of talking heads, lots of flapping jaws, just like I am now about what this could mean. What we actually got is the most comprehensive roadmap and discussion of what Bethesda is working on and planning to do that we have ever gotten from them in the history of the studio. And there's two reasons for that. First, because generally speaking, they only work on a game or two at a time in the past. But they have, and we've seen as time's gone on, you know, besides Elder Scrolls Travels, Shelter, and they have been doing more and more simultaneously in recent years. They don't always get credit for that. One of the things that bothers me because they are continuing with Starfield support. They are doing things with Fallout 4 to some people's chagrin. They're working on next-gen upgrade updates and they're porting stuff to Switch. They're doing all this. They are working on many things, uh, things that were previously rumored that are now confirmed. But let's get to it. What did they discuss? So, first of all, as I mentioned a couple weeks ago, it was their 40th anniversary. And so they say for 40 years, we've built games that have entertained almost half a billion players, more than just games. And they talk about this is what driving is driving us forward. So point number one as they list everything they're doing, which this is coming on the heels of obviously the serious discussion we had last week and the news that we've talked about as far as layoffs and changes at Xenomac Studios and Bethesda Game Studios themselves, and Obsidian and all these Xbox studios with more to come. This is partly in response to the serious nature of that, but also in response to some of the backlash afterward, where people there are people out there who just say, Well, they're not doing much anyway because they're waiting for a single game, like Elder Scrolls 6, you know, which admittedly they have waited far too long, we all agree. Or the next fallout single player, or the World of the Fall 3 remixer. Like there's all kinds of things that we're impatient for. So I get it. But this right here is designed to kind of ameliorate that. So, first off, Starfield continues, which is good because that's something we weren't 100% sure on what they'd be doing with Tim Lamb's team after the layoff. As we enter year three, which will be on September 3rd, uh coming up. So in just over a month, we're not even at three years yet. Gameplay improvements, and they'll expand the settled systems with new stories, target improvements, additional updates while preparing for the launch of new Starborn content next year. So scheduled DLC, starborn DLC apparently, approvements and updates. And they mentioned that more than 40% of their players already customized their experience through creations, and they'll continue investing in creators and giving them new ways to make Starfield their own. Now that, while true, I did mention how they did some of the people who are working with the creations system and uh liaising between modders and the studio are no longer there. But that said, I'm sure that they're still persisting with some of that. But any thoughts on Starfield or any of that so far, you guys?

SPEAKER_07

I'm glad they're still supporting it. Yeah, I mean, it makes sense. It doesn't there was never any, you know, reason to think that they wouldn't continue. I mean, that that was a big brand new IP. You know, they're not just gonna let it fizzle out.

SPEAKER_16

Right, big brand new IP. And yes, perhaps it hasn't sold as well as Fallout 4 or Skyrim, but it's had a really solid base. It's sold better than most of their previous games before those ones, and as they've uh mentioned today, over 17 million players. So that's plenty. And we knew that it was well over 12 million. I think the last official number we saw was about 12.

SPEAKER_08

Fallout 4 and Skyrim each had five previous games in the series to you know to build up.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, right. So they compare Starfield's sales to Fallout 1 and Arena, and I'm sure it's doing fine.

SPEAKER_16

Well, and to be fair, any new IP from the creator of Fallout, and well, the creator of Elder Scrolls and the continuer, the creator of recent Fallouts, yeah, they're going to attract people from that reputation. But that's exactly right. So yeah, I'm with you, Ray. I assumed they would be moving forward somewhat, but I did think that it would that they may slow down, that we may not get another full expansion, that it might just be creations from here on out. So it's good to get that officially, because that is what Todd said. Like what Todd said should stand until people say otherwise. And during the talks with Tim and with a couple interviews with Todd around the launch of free space or I'm sorry, free lanes and Terra Normada. You know, they said, this is not the last of Starfield, we will be making more. And so it makes sense. And I'm glad to get the confirmation. Next up, created by players. So they go into uh stuff about the creation kit and all that. And they say, from the beginning, we've provided players the tools to create their experiences, more win construction set. This year, there's another major milestone for creations with the expansion to Fallout 4, which is true. That just launched into Fallout 4 this year, joining Skyrim and Starfield. So now all three of their franchises have the creations platform system for mods. Now, not everybody uses them, because of course they've been allowing mods forever on PC, but we have them on console. It's now in creations, and there's more to it. They are also proud to say creators have earned more than 10 million in royalties from their work, which that's kind of a staggering figure when you think about it. I don't know how many verified creators are out there, but you have to become a verified creator to earn money with your mods. And I've mentioned before that in talking to verified creators, a lot of them have confirmed, without giving exact figures that they can't give, that the split for the creations are significantly better and feel in their favor compared to what Creation Club was in the past. So people who will say, oh, paid mods is just lining Bethesda's pockets with no work. Well, they're doing a lot to support them. They're doing a lot with the tools, but also the mod authors are getting a significant portion at this point. And many mod authors have gone full time as authors or close to it, to where it's allowing them to communicate. So yeah, that's a good thing overall. Okay, you ready for the next biggin?

SPEAKER_07

Uh-oh.

SPEAKER_16

The future of Fallout.

SPEAKER_07

Wait, I thought Bethesda lost the Fallout franchise.

SPEAKER_16

I know, right? Oh my gosh, the number of thumbnails. Bethesda has lost Fallout. Sorry, Todd. This is what you deserved. Obsidian has Fallout now.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

It's just a bit dramatic and ridiculous, and the grifters be grifting hard. Now, we did mention it, we're excited. It has been announced that Obsidian is working on a fallout game. We talked a little bit about that last week, I believe. Although the week has jumbled together. So I was that in time for the show last week. I think it was, but I didn't suddenly don't know. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Good. Good. So, you know, that is one of the uh exciting updates to happen, which in the face of layoffs, again, can be difficult, but got more into that. Josh Sawyer leaving the team. But yeah, despite what's being said, no, of course Bethesda game studios is working on Fallout. And of course, they're the ones working on Fallout 5. That has been the case. And of course, they have multiple Fallout projects in the Worth. Todd has said that several times recently. Again, when he was interviewed around the launch of Terra Normada, talking to Mortismal Games and others, he said, while Elder Scrolls is our primary focus, we have multiple Fallout projects in the works. That verbatim, that is what he said. So as Ray was saying before the show, we talked about the big vents. Like most of this is stuff that we knew, if you pay attention. But there are a lot of people who they just they follow whoever's shouting the loudest somewhere, and they think Bethesda doesn't do anything anymore because they haven't got what they're looking for, you know?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. It's the damn algorithm.

SPEAKER_16

That's a lot of it. It really is. So you want to hear about the future of Fallout, Andrew?

SPEAKER_08

I don't know. Is it gonna piss me off?

SPEAKER_07

Well, actually only unless if you don't want any Fallout games to come out, then yes, this is gonna piss you off.

SPEAKER_16

Or if you're upset about the lack of shelter on this list, because Yeah, where's my shelter online? Actually, you'll be really surprised because you're about to hear some about to hear something about shelter. Okay, let's go on. Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development. First, Fallout 76 continues to be home to millions of players exploring Appalachia together with nearly they go on, they talk about the updates. However, here's the big one quote In fact, we have a major Fallout 76 expansion planned for next year. Ravenrock, a prequel story to Fallout 3. Yes, they are launching an expansion called Ravenrock as a prequel to Fallout 3 in Fallout 76. I have no idea how that's going to work, but I cannot wait. Okay.

SPEAKER_08

Let's see, Raven Rock. That is the Enclave facility near it's on Soulstein. You get your fucking Isaacs there, the chaos. You gotta cross Red Mountain. Yeah.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah, that that's the Ravenrock they're talking about, the one on SoulStine.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

No, that so we don't know anything beyond that. However, it would explain why some people have seen references to the Capitol Wasteland in some files. That while they have said that they're not doing expeditions anymore, this sounds quasi-expedition-esque. I I don't know. I will we'll wait and find out. But that's really exciting. And I'm curious if that is going to be the 76 update to the game. Because John Rush has said at SGF and other times recently that y'all will not believe what we're doing for the 76 update. And we currently are on update 69 or 70. So that could be next year. I don't know if this is the one, but it might be the one. Next up, Fallout 4, the most award-winning game in the franchise, just celebrated its 10-year anniversary and passed over 35 million copies sold and attract a new audience. So that's not what's next for Bethesda, but they wanted to give that milestone there. We also know quote again players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we're not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remixers for both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Both. Y'all are dumbfounded right now. Y'all are dumbfounded. You're shocked. No, I know what Ray is thinking. Ray is like, I'll believe it when I see it.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

I know you too.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. Ray will believe it when he sees it, and Andrew thinks, oh my god, they're gonna make those games playable. Awesome.

SPEAKER_12

I both are kind of valid, despite the fact that we did just play through both of them.

SPEAKER_16

I totally get that. Why you look forward to it.

SPEAKER_08

But yeah, so the Oblivion Remix or Dead for Oblivion to me was just outstanding.

SPEAKER_16

It was. It really was.

SPEAKER_08

Please, please do that to New Vegas and three. Oh my god, make those games playable, and I will love you.

SPEAKER_16

A few of the issues with lag on the Oblivion Remixer for some PC configurations and some things. If if you really turn down settings stuff, it ran well for the majority of people and it ran fantastic on consoles. So yeah, hopefully we get that treatment or better. We knew Fallout 3 was coming. It had never been officially confirmed, but we knew Fallout 3 was coming. However, Fallout New Vegas as a remixer has been in doubt for a while. Like, yes, it made sense. Yes, they know the fans wanted it, but people have said such things as, oh, I don't know if they could, I don't know if they still have the source code, but you know what? They could remake it. And they've got the game. Like that it all depends how they work on it. We know that if they want to do it, they can. And apparently they are. So I can't wait to get years of speculation on that. Next up, Fallout Shelter. They're just talking about state of fallout here.

SPEAKER_10

With more than seasons. Yay!

SPEAKER_16

It is the most popular way to experience Fallout with more than 250 million players. There's more ahead, including new seasons, Andrew. Look at that.

SPEAKER_10

New seasons, give us your money.

SPEAKER_16

Additionally, and you may groan here, an unscripted Fallout Shelter television project is in the works with our partners at Amazon and Kilter Films.

SPEAKER_08

That's gonna be like a live action reality show, big brother type, vote you off the vault.

SPEAKER_16

Big brother in the vault.

SPEAKER_08

You don't know how to create a filter for the water chip, you're off.

SPEAKER_16

Dude, if they have a if they like have a challenge, can you imagine a social community challenge? Design, design an experiment to run on our players in the vault. And how cool would that be, right? I've always wanted to be overseer for a day or a lifetime.

SPEAKER_09

Or a lifetime.

SPEAKER_16

It's good to be overseer. I'm just saying.

SPEAKER_09

Good to be overseer. Tom Petty said that, I think.

SPEAKER_16

Next up, they'd like to congratulate Kilter. Films and Amazon Studios on 10 Emmy nominations for season two of the Fallout Show just came out. And production on season three is underway, which we know production actually started about a month ago. Uh in the actual filming for the show. And yeah, they got 10 Emmy nominations for season two.

SPEAKER_08

What was season one? Do you recall?

SPEAKER_16

I don't remember how many, but there were a significant number. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Was the general consensus the uh season two just as good? Not quite as good. I haven't really paid attention to the it varied a lot.

SPEAKER_16

Season two had more fan service. I think the overall consensus was maybe if season one was a nine, season two was an eight point five. Is you know how I put things together, as in it was almost as good, but not quite there because, like Ray was saying, they kind of stopped halfway, like we're not quite there yet.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, didn't quite finish it.

SPEAKER_16

There's more to come. I mean, we just wanted more, you know? And finally, something else to mark on your calendar, y'all. And I mean, maybe it's not as big as a mini-season or maybe not as big as Fosh Knocked, but while they won't host a traditional Fallout Day broadcast this year, they're already planning something special for Fallout's 30th anniversary in 2027, when Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C.

SPEAKER_08

Okay. So they are doing making an appearance?

SPEAKER_16

A Fallout Day celebration live in Washington, D.C., which makes you think is that going to coincide with when they launched with Fallout 3 Remaker, which also takes place in Washington, D.C.

SPEAKER_08

Uh, would you say 2027?

SPEAKER_16

Yes, next year.

SPEAKER_08

What you said?

SPEAKER_16

Next year. Yep. I've expected that the Fallout 3 Remaker, if it launched, was most likely going to be next spring before the show. Could be as late as Fallout Day. I mean, that would, of course, make sense depending upon when they schedule this too. But we're looking at the Remixer next year, most likely. And they're gonna have a big event. So I'm excited about that. And the Raven Rock for, you know, the expansion for Fallout 76 should, assuming things stay on schedule, which we all know how that goes, should be before that. So that is the update on Fallout stuff. Except they also mentioned the Obsidian thing. Studio collaboration, next point. Wasteland continues to expand. If we team up once again with our longtime friends at Obsidian Entertainment, we're happy to confirm they're working with us on a new Fallout project. We'll have more to share in the future. So, what we knew, but to talk about working together. And in fact, if I were to jump over to a Todd Howard interview, let me just check on this real quick.

SPEAKER_08

Obsidian doing the new doing a new Fallout title. Are they also responsible for the New Vegas remake or is Bethesda doing the remake?

SPEAKER_16

So we don't have any information beyond the fact that it's happening. The supposition currently is that Virtuose, who did the Oblivion Remixer, is doing the Fallout 3 remixster and would then move to the New Vegas after, or are working on them simultaneously and will finish that next.

SPEAKER_08

Can you say that organization or company again? What do you say?

SPEAKER_16

That's uh Virtuose. They're actually so they're a worldwide network of studios. They do a lot of work for hire. They they were known originally as a bit of a port studio, porting games from one system to another, doing versions, working on next-gen versions and updates, et cetera. Or occasionally, you know, DLC for hire, stuff like that. So not everything they've done has been there's been mixed results with some of their ports. But obviously, you know how the Oblivion came out, and hopefully Fall 3 is at least as good, if not better. They may have learned some stuff from the Unreal Hitching that some players experience. So we'll see. But here's what I was looking for. So in an interview with Jez Corden from Windows Central, Windows Central, he did ask a little bit about it. He asked Todd, who was able to talk to Todd briefly. He said, Obsidian made Fault in New Vegas, among one of the most beloved entries in storied Fallout Canon. Fans love at first reactive world. How did the collaboration with Obsidian come about? And what do you think of the online mythology supporting a surrounding a purported rivalry? End quote. So here's Todd's response. I appreciate some of the fan chatter editorial. He does not appreciate the fan chatter. But behind the scenes, there's a huge amount of like mutual respect between Bethesda and Obsidian. We're always kind of wondering if we could find a way to work together in the right way. And when those things come up, I think I definitely look at the franchise all up. As you see in the notes, everything that's kind of happening with Fallout. You sort of say, is there a way or window or a pocket where we could do something about that together that really made sense? And so we're super excited about the opportunity working together. He goes on to specifically, and this isn't a quote anymore, talking about how Obsidian's workflow mirrors Bethesda's with a core team that's been together for decades and a lot of legendary Fallout alumni there. And Jez took the chance to ask Todd if we could see maybe more collaborations in the future with Tim Caden Obsidian, Brian Fargo at an exile. We could see more products more in the future, like an isometric Fallout 1 remake from An Exile. Hello, you guys know I've been saying that forever. Fallout One on the Whistle and 3 engine would be awesome. And Todd said the teams are, quote, pretty in sync. End quote. And they've seated heard pretty much every idea for Fallout spin-offs. So it obviously neither confirm nor deny, as always. But still, that's fun. That is fun.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. So looking forward to playing that here in a couple years.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, you know, I wouldn't be surprised. Okay. Let's just keep going. Guys, I told you, these are not just the bits. These are full ass hunkin' trunkin' iguanas. Right in front. I mean, there's so much. Okay. The Elder Scrolls and Beyond. He mentions teams are now developing Elder Scrolls 6, as we know, and Fallout 5, both on the Creation Engine 3, which Todd mentioned just this past spring. That Creation Engine 3 is the current one they're doing. It's a shared technology. It's going well, and they've been working on it since Starfield's launch. Allows the teams to support multiple projects simultaneously with new tools, rendering. Fallout 5 is currently in pre-production. So again, just like with Elder Scrolls during Starfield, Fall It 5 during Elder Scrolls 6, pre-production only, which means concept art and ideas, most likely. Meetings, probably a lot of meetings, talking back and forth, looking at concept art, hashing things out. But usually pre-production does not mean a line of code, or very, very little there, aside from what they might be testing with, working on the engine and working on that. But going on, over 65 million copies of Skyrim sold, which is great. Last number we got was 60 million. Clayers are still exploring Skyrim 15 years later, but we know it's been a long wait for the sequel. Next chapter is on the way. We are where we plan to be. We're loving how it looks and playing it every day. So that's the quote. And I think that last sentence is the most important part. Just affirming that not only is it on the way, but they're where they plan to be, which is awesome. Loving how it looks, hell yeah. That's what I've heard people have seen it too. And playing it every day. So that's when Starfield was at the point where they loved how it looked and were playing it every day. It was just over like 14 months from at least we started hearing that for people like Pete Hines and such. So that is a good sign. That is a good sign. I like this a lot. Going on the road ahead.

SPEAKER_08

That's Christmas next year, then.

SPEAKER_16

I would love that. And we'll talk about a timeline right after this. So they say across Bethesda Game Studios, we're building for the future of Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Starfield. We're investing in our technology, bringing teams closer together, supporting our live games, and developing the next generation of Bethesda RPGs. We couldn't be more excited for what's ahead and wanted to share as much as we could today. And then they go on to say, you know, thank you for all you've given us. Can't wait to continue them together. Platitudes, and then they did a number of graphics to kind of hit these main points about Starfield, about Fallout, about Working with Obsidian, about Ravenrock, about the TV show, about everything happening going on. So some really good stuff, y'all. If there was a thing that you doubted they were doing, well, now you kind of have an answer on what's on the roadmap. You know, at least a good bit of it. One further thing I will mention real quick, because there is stuff saying, oh, the layoffs got their butt in gear. Or oh, Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Xbox, putting down the hammer and making Todd actually do something. Guys, obviously they don't turn on a dime. These have been on the works, just the way Bethesda does it. They only talk about things shortly before they do it, aside from Elder Scrolls 6, which again was saying we're gonna do that after Starfield.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. If any if that had any impact on it, it's just the fact that they felt like they had to take all this stuff that they've already told us so many times and put it into one statement. Yeah. To kind of, okay, here's a recap of everything we've told you so far.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah. Hey, Gemini, can you go through every interview with Todd Howard with various people in the last three years, plus other Bethesda luminaries and stuff we've posted that keeps getting misquoted and put it all in one article?

SPEAKER_16

Like, besides the new info, we didn't know about Ravenrock in 76 as a specific thing. And we did not know the Fault 3 Remakes are confirmed, we did know, and New Vegas confirmed, we did not know. So there are two new things here. Also hearing Elder Scrolls on track. That's really good. And then, of course, the Obsidian working on follow-that is a new thing that probably wouldn't have come about without Asha. But here's something that Bethesda posted as a follow-up on as a comment to my friend Paris' post about, you know, how the majority of the roadmap should have started years ago, which some of it did, as I'm saying. Some of it did, but it would have been better. I 100% agree if they had a new Fallout game or a full remaster ready for season one or season two of the show. Absolutely. But he talked about that a little bit. And then Bethesda came and they said, most of what we shared today has been in motion for years. We've just traditionally stayed quiet until things are ready to show. Pre-production is a longer road than people often realize. There are a lot of moving parts across our games, TV series, and more. The new piece is working more closely with teams like Obsidian and Xenemax Online Studios. Excited to finally talk about some of what we're building. We appreciate the passion and support. And that is something that wasn't in this big open letter that they did and the roadmap. They're probably both ways. Probably working on stuff for ESO and then also dovetailing and working on things for ES6.

SPEAKER_07

And really, the the TV show thing, those were just missed opportunities. Those are things that they're getting spanked for in the boardroom, you know, because investors are pissed off that they could have made more money.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Monday, right?

SPEAKER_12

They could have made more Monday. Bring it home. Bring it home for Papa Satchia. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I think it was kind of a surprise success, though. No one knows how something's going to catch.

SPEAKER_16

They were surprised at how well it did. They were hopeful. They thought it was good, but I think they were surprised that it was the second most watched show on Prime that year and doing just as good this past season. It's yeah, that is awesome.

SPEAKER_08

Definitely expanded the uh populace's conscious awareness of Fallout. Definitely.

SPEAKER_16

You're right. For people in the boardroom, right? Like you're saying, they could have made more money. And for fans, we see it as a lost opportunity to get more fallout because we love it and we want more. So both these things are totally true. But one thing I would reiterate that I've said elsewhere that they did at least try. So we got the Fallout for Next Gen update with season one, which was a mess. It was it broke people's games more than it helped. On consoles, it helped, sure. But on PC, it just broke more things than it fixed, but it took them over a year to fix it. That was no bueno. That was bad.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, that was very no bueno.

SPEAKER_16

That was bad news bears. They did try there. They're like, shoot, we need to rush because Fault 3 remake is not gonna be ready yet. And then they did, given how popular it was and how it actually brought people to 76 too, they did try to have stuff coming to 76. You know, that summer we got a number of new cryptids, and then they did the The Valley there. And then they had for season two, they brought the ghoul in, you know. So we got all the ghoul content last year and all the new stuff and actually brought the ghoul into the game. The obviously, like both we were able to ghoulify it in between, and then we got the ghoul himself in the game. So as far as how they implemented it, whether it's enough, no. It's it's they obviously it would have been better to have more. But I just thought it was important to say this stuff has been in the works. And honestly, without COVID, and without like if you look at their roadmap where the original leaks came from, the roadmap they had planned on having the Fallout 3 remixer out a year or two ago, time to coincide with the show. And it's a shame that they just couldn't because of things. So that is what I got for the bits, y'all.

SPEAKER_08

All right, good bits. Yeah, big chunks this week. So what? We're moving on to Vault Talk Time, right?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, just a minute. You know what? Let let me just lay down the Jessica timeline, okay? Okay. Now, it's this is wrong. This is dead wrong. Okay, I'm tragically optimistic, but if you guys want something to kind of set yourselves by and think about, so my original thoughts had been Fallout 3 remixer, early first half 2027, Elder Scrolls 6, either late 2027 or by fall 2028. So between fall 2027, fall 2028. Now I would say most likely the Fallout 3 remixer with Fallout Day, given they're doing the special event. And then most likely ES6, 2028 now. I still I have bets with some friends it's gonna be 2027. We'll see. But this announcement, I don't think they're gonna launch the remixer and ES6 within a few months of each other. That's that's most likely not happening. Then the Obsidian Fallout game. People are like, oh, that's gonna be years. You know what? I wouldn't be surprised if you saw in three years. Um obsidian often finishes games within three years. They're working on a base of some stuff they already had started. So what if we got 27-3, 28 ES6, 29 or 30, maybe even 29, the Obsidian Fallout game, and then a year either after or before the New Vegas remake, sure. So we're looking at three, four years of Fallout if well, sorry, with it, Elder Scrolls 6 in there, if if it holds. And then Fallout 5, eh, probably 32 of the earliest. But hey, stuff to look forward to.

SPEAKER_08

God damn it. This all this bullshit just lets them keep pushing that Fallout 5 more year after year after year. Each one of these new projects that we all pretend to be so exciting about, ugh, just pushes off my Fallout 5, goddamn it. So it won't be nice to have playable versions of those uh clunky games.

SPEAKER_16

It'll be really nice, and I have high hopes for the obsidian Fallout as well.

SPEAKER_07

Um so my uh my only hope on the the Oblivion Fallout in New Vegas remakes her is that they revive Doc Mitchell's spinning head. Was that a that was a feature that they that they edited out of the game? It was so disappointing.

SPEAKER_08

Was it like when the bee hits the cart in Sky?

SPEAKER_07

And the cart flips around. It was exactly like that. He'd be sitting there talking to you, and his head would rotate vertically around his, you know, vertically, I assume horizontally. No, it's oh my god, it would spin. It was like the back of his neck at a pivot point, yeah, and his head just spun around it.

SPEAKER_16

He turned into like a bit of a got a little bit of a long neck, not quite like the long dogs in 76 back in the day, but a little bit giraffish and it just spun. It was so creepy. When to go ahead.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, that was that was the best bug ever.

SPEAKER_16

Chat is saying Starfield 2 in November 2077. Y'all, if we're going on the just timeline again, too, don't expect Starfield 2. The next property we get in Starfield if anything will probably be a spin-off or a collab or something else, probably in the far future. I don't think Starfield is set up to be a sequel game. I mean, maybe eventually, of course, because all things can happen, but it's not on the timeline. I doubt it's even being discussed. I do not think that's what Starfield is. It's a place to play Genesis.

SPEAKER_05

Exactly.

SPEAKER_16

This episode was written by Chris Brady Denton and directed again by Frederick Eotoy. So this was a fun episode after missing Maximus so much. Last week, we now got lots of Maximus. Enough.

SPEAKER_08

Brotherhood Heavy.

SPEAKER_16

Yes, it was Brotherhood Heavy. So it's gonna get heavier as it goes on. But I was really happy to check back in, and I think we got some really dramatic moments here in this episode. First, we start off with a scene that would perhaps be one of the more controversial moments from last year. And yet actually seeing it, I think it really established a lot. So do you guys want to one of you want to lead us into this first scene? Visiting Shady Sands?

SPEAKER_07

So evidently Shady Stands was moved to a more lush location because it was all green and you know flourishing.

SPEAKER_08

This is before the incident.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. No, I I get it, but when you visit Shady Stands in Fallout 1, it's just desert.

SPEAKER_08

So we've got the whole relocation aspect, but we got to see Well, we know they can rotate a dinosaur's orientation, so they're just playing freewheeling with all of our geography here.

SPEAKER_16

Dinosaurs, cities, all of that. So we got a really nice overview. I I enjoy the overview of it. I like seeing it lush, seeing the areas where they were growing. And the reason it's lush is because they're kind of showing that it was becoming a more advanced civilization. You know, the NCR had become more advanced. They had irrigation, they were getting water. So we load in on Max, and Max is just a kid, and he's walking through the square of town after we get the big establishment shot with Shady Sands. And he's walking through a market, and there are people talking, they're wearing more 50s clothing, which is nice. It's nice to see some people in the wasteland that aren't just wastelanders, raiders. A lot of these characters people seem like real people, and they're establishing that this is a functioning society. You've got a book cart, they're actually reading. People are literate. They got a market, they're selling vegetables. So Max is walking down the street and we see him saying hello. And we then switch over to seeing his father. And he is working on a water pump, which looks just like the pumps in Fallout 4 and 76. That was really great to see. Working on the pump purifier, hammering on it, tinkering away. We see that he's very handy with technology, which might be where Max gets some of that from. One of the reasons he went into the Brotherhood, among other things. And he pulls a glass of water, tests it for rads as his wife comes over and leans in. No rads, clean water.

SPEAKER_05

Clean water.

SPEAKER_16

Super excited. He then goes and he has his wife take a sip and a drink.

SPEAKER_07

He says, We can have more kids.

SPEAKER_08

Or something. I was like, whoa.

SPEAKER_12

I didn't love that line.

SPEAKER_16

I I don't admit, I was like, whoa. But it was funny. The idea is that more water, town will grow, everybody will grow, and their family can grow. But the wife was not quite as on board with that.

SPEAKER_08

Families are the foundation of civilization.

SPEAKER_16

To be fair, I feel like Mac's dad was more thinking about the first part of that than the latter part.

SPEAKER_08

But probably.

SPEAKER_16

We pull out to a wider establishing shot again of Shady Sands, and on the outskirts of town on a little farm, there's a guy propped up in his garden area behind a fence, kind of looking down the road. And up the road we see someone coming leading a Brahmin. Actually, he has the wagon, right? He's actually pulling a wagon. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Pulling a wagon. Hauling it with him.

SPEAKER_16

So he comes in, and then we get a fan service moment in a way where this guy, oh, he's with the NCR. Look at that. He's got an NCR helmet and uniform on. Okay, cool. And he's saying, patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

SPEAKER_22

Here I have that. Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

SPEAKER_08

Over and over and winter.

SPEAKER_16

I love the fact the way he repeats like that is while it's explained in a minute, it's kind of a nod to the games because just like took an arrow to the knee, seems to be like the ubiquitous line. Hear all the time, which you don't actually hear that much, but it enough that it became the cloud district. Yeah, exactly. Oh Nazim, my goodness. But people got almost as tired of patrolling the highway makes you wish for nuclear winter, because we heard it so much. It's one of the common ambient dialogues. So him repeating that was kind of hilarious. But he also looks a bit out of it and a bit zombie-esque. And he's walking into town with his cart.

SPEAKER_08

Are his eyes bleeding yet? No, that might be later. Hang on.

SPEAKER_16

His eyes are not yet bleeding. So then we go back over to Max's dad.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, uh didn't they get alerted that somebody was having trouble? And so he ran he and his wife ran to the square.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, there's a bit of a hub.

SPEAKER_07

And uh Max was already there.

SPEAKER_16

And we see people clustered around the cart. And on the ground there by the cart is the soldier. But he's not really moving. He's twitching a little bit. And he's still standing at the line, and he looks very out of it. And then his eyes start bleeding, as you're saying.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. And they're calling for a doctor and you know, somebody we get we need to help him.

SPEAKER_16

Yep.

SPEAKER_07

And then Max's dad rolls him over and sees the chip on the back of his head.

SPEAKER_16

Which alerts him that something must be happening.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

How big is this one? Is this a larger one or is this a smaller one? It's a bigger one.

SPEAKER_16

About the size of a scarab beetle, maybe. I don't know. How big are scarab beetles? I don't even know.

SPEAKER_07

Why'd you use that as your uterus magic? It's the same size as that thing nobody knows.

SPEAKER_16

You know, scarab beetles, you know, that thing everybody talks about.

SPEAKER_08

That's 17.2 scarab beetles tall. That's great.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, so he starts looking around, and that's when he pulls the cover off of the back of the wagon and finds the bomb.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, what a good-looking bomb. Like, okay, this whole thing was a surprise. So we get the bomb in there, and it's one of the large payload ones, like the kind that not that you would use in a fat man, but that you would actually get from the facility in Fallout 4 to be able to payload facility.

SPEAKER_08

Right. Sentinel side.

SPEAKER_07

Not quite megaton, but yeah, it wasn't as big as a megaton, but it was yeah, the the big ones that are in the sentinel.

SPEAKER_16

Yep, the kind that you would want to give to Liberty Prime. Liberty Prime.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, Liberty Prime apostles.

SPEAKER_16

I almost said Optimus Prime. Like, no, Liberty Prime. Quite a large area of effect. And to be fair, the actual effect it had was larger. So the dad goes to disable it. He's actually quite smart. He pulls out an eyepiece, he gets in there, he clips it, seems to work, and then Oh, by the way, it's using a Pip Boy as a timer to you, a modified Pip Boy as the timer trigger agent. And then it says fail safe activated on it, the panel to the interior slide shut, and the dad panics, just like everyone else was as they're running, because he knows he's not gonna have time to do it. And a countdown timer starts with three minutes.

SPEAKER_08

So why three minutes?

SPEAKER_16

Why wasn't it just one? I don't know.

SPEAKER_08

I mean, I assume that's the length it takes to have a good dramatic scene in a television show. So that's probably why three minutes.

SPEAKER_16

Enough time people can run and maybe have a hell.

SPEAKER_08

If you blow up a town, why do you give it why do you give the a countdown at all?

SPEAKER_16

Any warning at all? Well, to be fair, if the dad hadn't uncovered the bomb, there wouldn't have been a countdown timer that would have been seen. You know what I mean? They needed to give enough time to be able to get into the center of town. So there was a timer for that. But it was probably set to happen when he arrived or soon thereafter. But because they discovered it, the failsafe was engaged three minutes. Yeah, I'm with you. I imagine that was obviously a dramatic moment enough time for the dad to run back home as he does while the wife is hearing the news and panicking, and they're grabbing Max and they're hugging him. Do you have any of that recorded, Andrew?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, listen. Okay, somebody's gonna come get you out. Okay. A little bit better we did okay.

SPEAKER_08

We did it, we raised him. He says there at the end. I was like, wow.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

At this point, that's all they can do. They can try to make sure he survives, they can try to help him become the good man they raised him to be. Which, as we know, Mac certainly tries. That's certainly what he wants to be, who he wants to be, although the voice then makes that difficult. It's tough. That whole idea, you know, the locking kid in the fridge. And we joked about it a bit last year because the number of times we saw that flashback scene. So it's nice to actually see the other side of it, you know.

SPEAKER_05

How many times in yeah?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, exactly. He came out like four times.

SPEAKER_12

At least we got to see him go in once.

SPEAKER_08

And what's this trope with radiation and refrigerators? Like, were fridges back then lead lined or something? Like, we're what I don't understand.

SPEAKER_16

Honestly, I don't know if it was a thing that they taught or talked about during actual early worries about nuclear strikes.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Maybe somebody in chat.

SPEAKER_08

That's rooted in some sort of truth, you know?

SPEAKER_07

Because it's Yeah, we were we were just supposed to hide under our desk.

SPEAKER_08

That's kind of a trope. Well, that's not gonna block shit, right?

SPEAKER_07

Hey, I was just a little kid. I didn't know any better. I just did what they told me to.

SPEAKER_16

Well, if you were to bing the incredibly specific question, could you survive a nuclear attack in a refrigerator? You would get a lot of uh answers.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Almost all published within the last year because of the Volley TV show. Although some probably due to things like uh Indiana Jones and Billy, the kid in the fridge, and all that. People are saying that it is unlikely. Surviving a nuclear refrigerator, fact of fiction.

SPEAKER_08

Unless it's lead lined, it's very unlikely, I would say.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Scientific analysis concludes surviving a nuclear bomb in a fridge is highly improbable. But still, it makes a good story and an amazing class. So this is what Max goes in. So we jump from this dramatic moment to a big pullback. We see a flash of light while he's hugging his wife. And then we get a look at the actual explosion and this town, Shady Sands we saw, the mushroom cloud in the middle, and a rounding explosion that's covering the entire area around the city.

SPEAKER_08

Alright, for those of us who are watching season one of Forever, do they give like all of the background and reasons and everything why Shady Sands was blown up? Nope. Okay, we learned that in season two here.

SPEAKER_16

The background that we do have is that it was her father who did it, that it seemed to be done as retaliation, partly for his wife trying to escape there and taking the kids. And then also we learned about that in season one of those two.

SPEAKER_08

We learned about that in season one. Yes.

SPEAKER_16

And then the biggest thing we learned is that part of their idea for Reclamation Day was they did not expect society to come back on the surface. They actually expected a lot of people to die out and for them to be able to emerge, and when they do, kind of become the ruling power. That was discussed in the meeting before and in a few other moments. That essentially the fact that a society was growing and that Vault Tech was wrong about what was going to happen out there.

SPEAKER_08

Oh. Okay. I'd forgotten about that aspect of it. That was sort of proof that they were incorrect.

SPEAKER_16

And he was trying to wipe the slates clean based on the original plan and projections.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, because when you emerge for Reclamation Day, you don't want any competition at the surface.

SPEAKER_16

At least these guys didn't. Right. Right. The tri-vault experiment there, exactly. So after the mushroom cloud, we then get a scene with Hank washing his hands, someone washing their hands and shaking a little bit. And then it pulls back, and you see it's younger Hank. And he's in the vault. And then you hear from the other room, a child say, Dad, we come in, and he goes in there and he's reading her the wing the Wind in the Willows book. Sets down his pit boy on the table, and it's blinking and flashing. Detonation successful.

SPEAKER_08

I wrote down Wind in the Willows because I knew that that could not just be a random book they choose. There has to be some sort of connection reference there. What and I was just gonna ask you guys, what is it? Wind in the Willows was Is that the one with a toad and a badger and stuff? I don't it's been so fucking long. Yeah, I'd have to re-refamiliarize myself.

SPEAKER_16

It was a great series. He asked Lucy, What will we read? And The Wind in the Willows? Ah, The Wind in the Willows. And then Lucy, of course, says, When's mom coming back?

SPEAKER_09

Oh. Bad news, honey.

SPEAKER_16

So he sets in, little domestic moment, and it just kind of shows, you know, the length Hank will go to and the double life he was leading.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. I'm sure if if we dig into it, there's a wind in the willows meaning or something there.

SPEAKER_16

Then we go back to uh growling and gunshots and a dark room and a close-up on Maximus's face, right?

SPEAKER_08

Oh, with the ghouls, right. Yeah, the factory stuff.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. He is walking through a factory with, I think Riley is the night with him. It's Maximus and Knight Riley, and they're clearing out feral ghouls in a facility, which looks very much like a Poseidon energy plant of some kind, something like that. It's got a lot of things.

SPEAKER_08

But they did a good job with the uh the factory atmosphere.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. And so he goes through, shoots a few, and then you get to the a room with a desk, and a really dramatic ghoul unfolding moment. It's very much reminded me of Super Duper Martin Fallout 4. When you hit that first bathroom and they start coming through the windows and off the floor, kind of folding themselves. Very creepy. And you're like, oh, that's dramatic. And then she stands up. Since she stands up, we just get to Maximus pulling out his pistol and blowing her up.

SPEAKER_08

I was trying to notice the weapons. They definitely sounded familiar. Like it sounds like they used maybe even like a similar, if not the same, sound files in the show, or try to mimic them at least. But I could not get any good clear visuals of the weapons they were using. Could you like Yeah?

SPEAKER_07

It was a standard laser pistol.

SPEAKER_08

Laser pistol?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

And I thought that Riley was using a different weapon. Was one of them using uh like a minigun or anything? It just sounded like there's like a big do do do do like a let's see, that wouldn't be a minigun. That's uh uh what are those called? I don't remember. Sorry.

SPEAKER_16

He may have been using it earlier. So they look it up and they move the dead body at the desk back. Obviously, you know, somebody running the facility, and there's a box on there. And Riley says, That's what we came for, and Maximus says, doesn't matter. I guess pack it up and report to the vertebrated. So he's coming in there, Maximus very confident in this scene, but in the time that has passed since before. We know time for the cool and Lucy to make it from California out to the Mojave, where they are, and stuff to go on with Max, and he's on a plan. So they pack it up, report to the vertebird, you get Maxwin back, he jumps into the vertebird, and they're flying, once again, looking very serious. And you see them flying over to the Caswinen. Uh it's not the Pridwin, right? It's the Caswinon.

SPEAKER_08

Right. What's a Caswinon? Is that what you said?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Yeah, which is technically an alternate name for the Pridwin, which is probably why they use it in Arthurian mythology.

SPEAKER_08

Some Welsh word, right?

SPEAKER_16

Exactly. Exactly. And so they fly back to the Pridwin and uh sorry, I'm just gonna call it the Pridwin. Let's shortcut all they're all Pridwins.

SPEAKER_08

They're all Pridwins. Don't save your emails, we know.

SPEAKER_16

Even though, exactly, even though last season people could zoom in and even see Pridwin lightly printed on it. But whatever. Whatever you want to call it. You see knights and squires and Brotherhood on deck, you see the vertebrae getting close, and then the actual hook arm comes out, hooks on to the roof with this where the thing flips up, pulls it up as the wings fold in, and we'll just mount. And you see Maximus, everybody hop out, and as they hop out, they say, All hail, knight Maximus.

SPEAKER_08

All hail, night maximus. With their very deep voice modulators.

SPEAKER_16

Exactly. And you can see he's got like a visible shift in demeanor that I'm kind of calling out. That Max just looks more comfortable. Walking down the deck is the same. He looks very serious, like he's on task, and you see him see Clint, see Alder Claire Quintus and Dane standing on the edge there.

SPEAKER_08

He definitely feels a new sense of responsibility, also not just responsibility upward, but an embarrassment downward, if that makes sense. Like he sees the actions of like the way other soldiers are behaving. Like they have multiple examples of this throughout this episode to display his development as a character, right? So like there's multiple times where he's chiding people throughout the BOS, whereas last season he was part of it. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_16

I would say in this, he's now at the point where he's got to be a bit of a role model.

SPEAKER_08

He is the sword, right? Yeah. The dude was like, I'll be the whatever, and you are the sword.

SPEAKER_16

He is pretty much the lead knight for this chapter, given the situation of how things have been. He's Quintus's right-hand man. But I do think you're right, it's a theme throughout the episode that Maximus has gained more responsibility, that he's living up to more who he wants to be, partly because of as we saw with his dad, and you know, we see where some of those ideals he has came from in the NCR and the way he was raised, also partly from what he learned from Lucy, like he said last season that there was somebody good out there, you know, and it was her. But throughout the season, um, and this episode in particular, we do see moments where Maxim is almost getting disillusioned by things the Brotherhood does, right? The way they act.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, absolutely, immediately. You can you can see as as soon as he starts getting promoted through the ranks, he starts seeing the cracks. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_16

Yep. And so then we get a quick cut to a scene with a classic Fallout playground. There's a couple of swing sets there, and a rocket. And there are some people bundled up like they're on Dantoine or something, right?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. Who are these people? Are these scribes? What are they? Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Looks like they were scribes.

SPEAKER_16

That's what it looked like.

SPEAKER_08

Had we seen a similar design to that in games? Like that just sort of looked sort of different to me with the scarves wrapped around the head and stuff, you know? And I assume that was just to keep sand debris out so they wouldn't breathe dust or whatever.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, because they were in a bit of a sandstorm.

SPEAKER_16

I would say it's it's a new outfit they made up, but I mean it's practical. The goggles made sense. We've seen flight goggles before. We've seen pieces of it, maybe not put together exactly that way.

SPEAKER_09

I love those rogue goggles, those are sweet.

SPEAKER_16

But I like the way they knew where they were going. They got to the rocket, they opened it up, and there's a secret, you know, there's a panel and a device inside, and they plug in a fusion core, which they've got a lot more of now. Fusion cores, they were getting a little bit a little bit more scarce over time. They plugged it in and they said, We got power. And then we switch back to Max walking up to Quintus. This is where he's actually coming up to him. And Quintus says, You encounter much resistance? Maximus. Abominations, nothing we couldn't handle. And then he looks at um the elder and he says, What is it with the device he handed him? And he's told, Well, it's the key to our new home. Quintus goes on, you know, a little bit speechifying, but up close. The brotherhood has become scattered, broken into dozens of rival chapters. Side note, love hearing him say dozens of chapters, something that again, we didn't really have confirmed about Brotherhood lore and the current situation until here. So dozens of rival chapters, but now we have the strength to unify them under one banner here, with the mightiest arsenal in history at our disposal.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, and then you see the the pylons start to rise up out of the sand. You know, the sand is blowing.

SPEAKER_08

That was very cool.

SPEAKER_07

The windmills open up and start to spin, and it uncovers the base that was hidden under the sand.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's very much like the dervish camouflage system in Hidden Valley, right? In New Vegas. Yep. This isn't the Hidden Valley site, though. We're gonna get about to find out that it's actually an Area 51, but but it's a similar kind of system. So I like the way they tied that in together.

SPEAKER_08

Oh my god, that's hilarious.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

But so that was super cool. And then we see that uncovered, and then we flash back to the conversation Maximus and Quintusburg's having. And as he pulls away, he says, Together we will fill our promise, kind of as a sidebar to Max, to make better this fallen world, my son. Calling Max.

SPEAKER_11

We will fulfill our promise to make better this this fallen world, my son.

SPEAKER_08

He is so dramatic when he talks. Like, that clip is seven seconds. When I record is like 48 seconds long, he's like, to do make the place the a better place. You know, I'm just like, get on with it, bro. Dramatic.

SPEAKER_16

Someone's gotta give that guy some Mountain Dew, speed him up a little. Come on, let's go. We don't have all day. The episode's gotta be under an hour. But yeah, Lee in Chad is asking, how did they know that they couldn't cover the base with a normal span?

SPEAKER_08

Uh there's a button on the Pridwin, right? It says it says push here.

SPEAKER_16

Exactly. No, no, this is Brotherhood lore. You know, Quintus is an elder and they have studied, and he has access to certain files. Like that is what he has dedicated his life to. Taking over the brotherhood, bringing them back to their former glory in his mind. And so he's always seeking out intel. He knew where to find the power strip. So he did know that it was there, and that's why he knew where to go to find the device to help power it and that would let them in and all that. He obviously discovered it somewhere along with other plans. So we switch from this scene to the next scene after the reveal. And we've got Lucy and the ghoul. Yeah. We're picking back up on them after what we saw last week, and they're just still they're walking through the desert. The stoop is worn off, they're out of that vault they were in. And the ghoul says water. I'm sorry, the ghoul demands water. Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

He's rude.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. Holds out his hands, looks at her, and yeah. Lucy gives it to him, and she's like, You're rude. And one thing you've got to think about, sure, you're looking for your family, but when you find them, will they appreciate the person you've become?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I have that audio here. Water.

SPEAKER_15

Are you always just rude? I'm guessing not. Look, your family may very well still be out there. Seen enough by now to know that nearly anything's possible. But one thing I wouldn't count on is I'm appreciating the kind of person you've become. I mean, you want them to like you, right? I'm just saying a little bit of kindness can go a long way. Charles Dickens, actually, we'll talk about it if you're interested. Nope. Pretty much cured.

SPEAKER_08

Like she goes into fucking Charles Dickens. The Christmas Carol.

SPEAKER_12

She tells him the entire Christmas Carol story, which is hilarious because he's pretty much healed. So we know in between when she started that story. Like, we just we probably skipped ahead like five minutes of her just nonstop talking.

SPEAKER_05

Yes. And he's like, nope. Nope.

SPEAKER_16

This also shows it, highlights again how she doesn't know that he's Cooper Howard. You know, you've asked before, Andrew. Does she have any idea he's Cooper Howard? No. She doesn't know. She doesn't know who he was before the war at all. And you know, she kind of mentions that here. She's like, I don't know who you were, but I wouldn't count them appreciating the way you've become. And uh obviously, chances are Cooper Howard's first play, first acting gig, was like in high school in Christmas Carol, probably, you know.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, I guarantee. I guarantee he's done that a million times in his acting career.

SPEAKER_16

Exactly. It's classic, amazing. But they're walking up, and then they hear off to the right, someone yelling for help.

SPEAKER_20

I have that as well.

SPEAKER_15

I think it's coming from inside.

SPEAKER_20

Empathy like mud. You lose your boots and that stuff.

SPEAKER_15

I'm not just gonna let someone die while I listen to him scream.

SPEAKER_20

Folks have been screaming for 200 years.

SPEAKER_15

Did it ever occur to you that if you helped them they would stop?

SPEAKER_20

You want to know what I was like before the war. I was just like you. Stupid. Stupid.

SPEAKER_07

I love that one.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that was really, really well done. Because you looked at you, you think he's gonna say something more revealing there? And no, he just says stupid. But he is full of good lines here. They're walking by where they hear the yells coming from. And the gamers of us are all no, no, no. Well, we knew it was gonna be bad, especially the deeper they go down.

SPEAKER_20

Never goes well.

SPEAKER_08

This is my favorite, just like little outtake from the whole bit there.

SPEAKER_20

Empathy is like mud, lose your boots and that stuff.

SPEAKER_08

Empathy's like mud, lose your boots and that stuff. That's a very, very cowboy saying, you know.

SPEAKER_16

You know a project we should do? The ghoul's book of wisdom. We took all his little aphorisms.

SPEAKER_12

Golden rule. Empathy is like mud. Folksman crying for help for years.

SPEAKER_05

But rules of the ghoul.

SPEAKER_16

One thing I want to point out about here, a little connection to the game and the story lore. So this is Affordable Owl's Discount Hospital, it's called. And so we know it's it's a domestic but private for-profit hospital of some kind. And underneath, they mentioned revolutionary treatments for the new plague. Okay, they they referenced the new plague on the sign. And this is something that isn't discussed much in the games recently. But part of Fallout Lore that's really big, we talked about before on the show plenty, is that there was during we had the resource wars and all that, but there was also a major plague happening. And that's partly what uh helped foment the dissolution of parts of the government and of society. And why groups became more isolated. It wasn't just about energy and power. There was also a major plague they were fighting right before the war.

SPEAKER_08

Fighting and do with the ghoullification, or was that only radiation that did the ghoul stuff?

SPEAKER_16

So, as far as you know, that's only radiation, but I often think that it could be a component in what happened. So it was a big epidemic. It was in the I believe the 2050s that it started. And it was part of why West Tech was working on the FEV in the first place, because they were working on, you know, revolutionary cures and various things. And we remember that great West Tech reference we got last week talking about skincare products, but we know they were doing a lot more than that. Yeah. And I don't know if it was con if it was connected to the war with China as well, and possibly any bioweapons that they had done. Like if the new plague was possibly instituted by bioweapons from one side or the other, just like Vault Tech, we may never know where it actually came from. Uh but we knew that they were trying to combat it, and that's partly what spurred a lot of West Tech uh research. Anyhow, empathy is like mud, right?

SPEAKER_08

But no lose your boots on that stuff.

SPEAKER_16

Lucy says doing the right thing is never a waste of time. So she trucks off, and the ghoul sighs and follows.

SPEAKER_08

Why? Just leave her. What's okay? I guess he needs her, right? Does he need her?

SPEAKER_16

He does.

SPEAKER_08

He's following Hank. I mean, so she.

SPEAKER_16

So Yeah, there's two things here. I mean, first of all, at this point, you get the idea that they've been traveling together for several weeks now, and despite the way things started, the ghoul is somewhat fond of her. He feels a bit responsible. He is somewhat fond of her, even if he is annoyed as heck by her most of the time.

SPEAKER_07

Well, I mean, come on, really, he's his opinion of her is bait.

SPEAKER_16

And that's part of it too, as we're gonna get to in a later episode. He needs her for that.

SPEAKER_08

If he dangles her, Hank might pay attention and lead the lead them to his family. There you go.

SPEAKER_16

I'm tragically optimistic, y'all, okay? Empathy. Empathy. He's losing his boots as we speak. So going into the hospital, it was a cool scene. You see them coming into the underground parking garage, into the building proper. Very much like going into AVR Medical or some of the other hospitals in Fallout. Various signs. Now, the bit there are a couple of references that are kind of funny. They talk about fighting the plague and various things, but there's also a sign that says, what is it? Half off lobotomies.

SPEAKER_08

No, that's hilarious.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, up up on the wall.

SPEAKER_08

I didn't see that one.

SPEAKER_16

It says it says half off lobotomies, which is just kind of hilarious. And so they're going through and it's getting more ominous as you go in, because it's an abandoned facility. You hear the screaming. You know a place like this, like these kind of abandoned buildings, especially the larger industrial ones, are havens for lots of ghouls or all kinds of critters. You know, we don't know what exactly. They go down the stairs, and as they round the corner, if we finally see there's a woman. So Lucy goes running up to help. And the ghoul has a line, and I believe he says tune it. Aren't you awful far west?

SPEAKER_08

Pretty far west now, aren't you?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, right. Awful far west, ain't you? And Lucy, of course, is like, what's he talking about? She says, ignore him. I got one stimpack left, okay? So the ghoul says, another great line. That would be profound misallocation of resources. Folks in them outfits don't deserve saving. This is when we know it's a tunic, it's Roman. The ghoul recognizes that she's a Legion. However, he mistakenly does not elaborate to Lucy. Like, I would say, okay, you know how a lot of times shows have stuff set up where you're like, if only they communicated better, half the stuff that goes wrong wouldn't go wrong.

SPEAKER_07

Right.

SPEAKER_16

Like if he could have simply said that she was Legion and briefly mentioned anything about the Legion, but he doesn't.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, does Lucy have any background knowledge on the Legion yet? What does she know about it?

SPEAKER_07

No, nothing. Not a bit. No, she hasn't encountered him at all. And the other thing is that she was a slave. You know, because only the slaves were dressed like that.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. Yeah. Well, and she's a woman, which means she's almost definitely a slave anyway in their society.

SPEAKER_07

You know, so he could have mentioned that too.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. But he doesn't. He doesn't say that. But he does hear another groan. And oh, there's a guy over there too. And the guy is obviously wearing Legion outfit. And he says, Let me help you up there, cowboy. And as he goes and reaches for the hand, reaches in and cuts his throat. And of course, Lucy gets freaked out. Like, no, why would you do that? And he says, Well, you did lead us to dinner. And he goes and grabs a bite. Pull something. Do they pull the tongue out of the guy's mouth? Like, what is he eating?

SPEAKER_08

That guy just looked like a strip of meat.

SPEAKER_16

Oh my goodness. Cannibal. How do you even? Give the guy a rough.

SPEAKER_07

Well. But in this case, he's he starts gagging and spitting it out.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. As if there's something wrong with meat. And then he goes walking over towards Lucy and the girl. And she says, No, no, not her too. Thinking the ghoul is about to kill her. And what is wrong with him? Why is he a monster? He just killed this guy in need of their help. Oh, reason they went in there. Because again, he didn't say anything about the Legion or what they're up to or what's going on. And just as the ghoul's starting to say something's wrong with the meat, suddenly we hear scuttling and scurrying.

SPEAKER_08

Kicks that body over and there's like green pus coming out, and you're like, oh, what's what's that from? And you realize, oh, there might be something else here. And then you hear skirtling of the air ducts above.

SPEAKER_07

Which is very alien, as is the next scene.

SPEAKER_08

Yes. Very much so. I didn't actually put that together, but yeah, good note.

SPEAKER_07

The uh the the small scorpion that jumped out and attacked Lucy wraps around her face.

SPEAKER_08

Face hooker, right.

SPEAKER_07

That's a good reference.

SPEAKER_16

But it's not just one. There's the small scorpion, which look more like a bark scorpion. You know how we have the bark scorpions and the giant rat scorpions and all in there? I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a baby rat scorpion or if it's actually a bark scorpion, like in the game.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, but it was a paler, that kind of beige-colored scorpion.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, beige and compact. But then as they fight it and get it down, you know, jumps on the ghoul and the ghoul's like, ah, get the heck off me. Then the big giant rat scorpion comes busting in, right? Like through the doors.

SPEAKER_07

Through the door, yeah.

SPEAKER_16

And what a gruesome scene. So we had the spark scorpions or the smaller scorpions. Now we get giant rat scorpion. As he's coming in, he grabs one of the other scorpions and mounds on it. Like they just don't care. Giant scorpion don't give. So that was quite the fight anyway. So he's tussling and rolling, he's the girl for protection, and finally takes it out, but gets hit while doing so. And he's doing doing poorly there. And so is the woman. And so Lucy has to come over and make a decision.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, because he he ends up shoving a hand grenade in the scorpion's mouth.

SPEAKER_08

Right.

SPEAKER_16

That's how he took it out. Yeah. That was good.

SPEAKER_08

The set design in the scene was really good. There was a stove in the background that is the same stove that they use in um the one with the like the little stovepipe that comes up off the right side. And a colander, the the junk piece colander looked exactly like it does. It was amazing. Good good job, set designers.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, there's a lot of practical stuff in this scene, too. I remember during one interview, Walton Goggins mentioned that with the baby rabbed scorpion attack was done using classic old school Hollywood trickery to get him to flinch and move and dodge. Because a crew member was flinging toy scorpions at him on a fishing line. Like he had him on a line, like winging them at him. So it's practical effects. He was actually dodging scorpions in CG.

SPEAKER_09

That's hilarious. I want to see that.

SPEAKER_16

Oh man, if that is on the season two Blu-ray, that would be fantastic. But he only mentioned interview. I don't know if there's actually footage of it. I don't imagine he would want there to be footage of it, but that'd be cool.

SPEAKER_05

Probably not.

SPEAKER_16

Anyway, that was fun. But the ghoul's not having fun right now. So he's like, give me that stimpack. Give me the stimpack. And Lucy is torn because the woman was already in major damage and she's hurt and hurt more now. And the ghoul is damaged. But she stimpaced the girl. And and the ghoul says the name of the title of the episode, you know, golden rule, Mofo. Like the real golden rule that Lucy was talking about, not his golden rule, the wasteland. And she says helps the girl up as she's starting to feel better. She says, That's your people. That rule is for and she's so upset with him right now after what he just did, murdering that innocent guy and using the girl as a shield. And she's like, You're a monster. And you need time to think about the consequences of your action. So but I'm not like you. I try to be a good person, and so that's why after I get her home, I'm gonna come back for you and help you.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, but also he has the convenience that the poison won't kill him. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, and she tells the girl, don't worry, he's very durable.

SPEAKER_12

And she says, She says, I wasn't worried about him, which is fair enough.

SPEAKER_08

I wasn't worried about him.

SPEAKER_12

Lucy says that's fair.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I love that. So that wraps this scene as we see Lucy escaping with the girl. And we are back in Vault 31.

SPEAKER_08

Norm.

SPEAKER_16

And he's waking up all the frozen Bud Buds junior managers. And we see them starting to come out, they're thawing, they're foggy, they stumble out a little bit as they come out. We have one person, ball from an upper row. It's all disoriented. There are a couple named here that we see, as far as I know. I know we've got Claudia, and Claudia can't really see right now. What did she say?

SPEAKER_08

Yes. Should I be able to see? Right. I have I have this scene. We'll drop that.

SPEAKER_14

Where's Bud Haskins? Has anyone see Bud Haskins? I'm sorry, why are we all here? I thought this was gonna be more of a one-by-one situation. There's been a change of plans.

SPEAKER_13

Should I be able to see by now? Relax, Claudia, but there's been a change of plans, obviously. Okay.

SPEAKER_18

Everyone, if I can just find it's not everyone at once.

SPEAKER_13

That must be it's reclamation day.

SPEAKER_18

It's been 200 years since you were frozen. It is reclamation day. Unfortunately, but that's consistent. So we can just try and remain calm. We need to figure out a way to get out of here together.

SPEAKER_14

Get out of here. Wait, wait, wait, wait. You're saying we're trapped.

SPEAKER_03

There's someone else that we can speak to about this.

SPEAKER_08

I love the is there someone else we can talk to about.

SPEAKER_12

Aaron needs to talk to a manager or Clark, whatever his name is here. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, that's so great. And the someone ate the crackers out of my welcoming kit.

SPEAKER_16

Obviously, Norm trying to survive the last, you know, week or two, stuck here in Vault 31 with just Bud ready to stick him with a needle. Yeah, God. This is fun. It is great seeing them, like it's comedy relief, comic relief to an extent. You see them, Norm doesn't really have control of the situation yet. He's trying to talk, but they they're just waking up from this. They got a pecking order. Claudia's great. I really like her. And I love the way the one girl pops in, like after she's saying, wait, we're trapped. And she's like, Claudia, obviously plans have changed. Like she's just repeating what the other one said.

SPEAKER_08

We're having a conversation here.

SPEAKER_16

We're all gonna die. We're all gonna die. Then we pop over to another vault with uh with Hank in the giant contact facility.

SPEAKER_07

Austin Powers. This is so Austin Powers.

SPEAKER_08

That's funny.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that was fantastic. So Hank's driving the cart and he's going down through. I I love the golf cart. Looks great. Hank's looking all dapper, and where is he going? Is it floor four? I think it was.

SPEAKER_08

He I don't remember what floor it was, but I noticed that it said livestock on whatever section he was going to. Interesting. I wonder if like I thought I assumed he was gonna like go check out some Brahmin or something, and that's when he pulled out his little test subject, the little white mouse.

SPEAKER_09

I was like, oh, livestock.

SPEAKER_16

Livestock. Yeah, and there might have been other livestock in there at some point, maybe there still is. So he grabs a little mouse, looks at him all cute, rides back. We're like, oh, okay, what's he doing? Brings him into a testing room, puts him in a chamber, attaches a little micro device, and poof.

SPEAKER_07

I absolutely love the fact that you've in that in that glass box, you've got this tiny little desk with a tiny little chair and a tiny little working computer monitor.

SPEAKER_16

It is so good. It's so like classic mouse experiment, which you know Vault Tech would do. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Another behind-the-scenes making thing I want to see is the little the explosions as Hank is like watching the glass, like how the I'm sure it's just like oatmeal and food coloring or something, but like exploding that he keeps hitting it. Time after time after time after time. I just want to see that behind-the-scenes shot too. That'd be fun.

SPEAKER_16

But the way it's done is really good. And it shows his meticulousness, it shows the oddness of the way VaultTech creates these experiments. And I just love the way it works. It's a little bit rats of nim, so much to it. But he's non-plussed and he just goes and grabs another one. We see him go back to the section, grab another mouse, bring it in, put him in, explode. And another. Now, they must have a I don't know if he's cleaning the tanks in between each time or how many tanks they have, because he goes through a lot of mics.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, tons of tanks, tons of tanks down there. He just tosses them into the trash room.

SPEAKER_16

And each time he either sighs or he says, okay, and he clicks the dial, clicks the dial, clicks the dial, and then boom. Mouse dooey. Yeah, kapow.

SPEAKER_08

But they juctapose that like very serious slunder of Kapoom, Kapow, Kapow with him, which is really odd, I thought. Like, as he's going around the hallways, he's got like a yo-yo that he keeps doing all these like crazy, like walk the dog, and he's doing all like these sort of you know, they they probably hired a yo-yo person to come in to do that because he's doing some stuff that normal people probably wouldn't be able to do with a yo-yo. So, you know, he's a little practiced at this. He's been walking around this facility, just the yo-yo symbolization of like like such playful and you know carefree versus the head popping of these like super ex super serious mice experiments that he's going through here is just making Hank's kind of seem like a loopy mad scientist at this point, you know.

SPEAKER_16

It works really well. It shows how detached he is, like that the Hank we see is you know, there's just there's layers to him.

SPEAKER_08

He really is just you'll beg me to work for you or whatever, you'll beg for my help or whatever.

SPEAKER_16

He's exactly and you see how manipulative he really is in a lot of ways with that. And the scientist in you, I saw you put in your notes, like, what is he testing for? What variables is he changing?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. As someone who has analysis as part of my um job, I'm like, what experiment exactly is he trying to do here? Because you know, with each experiment, you know, you record the result and then you change one variable and then you do it again and see how the that changes against your base results. And so I'm just sort of curious, like, is he upping the voltage? What what is what is the unit or what is the mind device? And I was gonna say, I hate typing the phrase mind control device. Like, what are we calling this like unit?

SPEAKER_12

The MCD mind control device?

SPEAKER_08

MCD, there you go. That's good. Like, I didn't know if they had dropped a word or yet, because I don't remember if they had someone anyone had said what the thing is called or anything.

SPEAKER_16

So I didn't're gonna be amused by what I call it in my head. I've been thinking of it as a weather bug.

SPEAKER_08

Ooh.

SPEAKER_16

Which is probably why I thought of the scarab earlier. Like, I don't know, I just I think it was like a little bug on their neck.

SPEAKER_08

Weather bug, well, it is uh, you know, one scarab high.

SPEAKER_16

So see, as we've previously determined, exactly. It's perfect. He's trying to miniaturize it, you know. Let's make it smaller, a little beetlesque. Down to the size of a flea. Down to a water that didn't mutate. Perfect for soup. You wouldn't even see it in there. You just swallow it.

SPEAKER_08

It all comes back.

SPEAKER_16

But then we switch back over to the VOS, and they are unlocking the door and walking into their facility, revealed to be area 51.

SPEAKER_09

This is the best. The scene is like I literally cackled. I cackled.

SPEAKER_16

Just really well done. Like dramatic music, and they stride in, and you start seeing stuff as they do, like treasures, and it's very Indiana Jones and The Lost Ark, which by the way, I believe you do see the Ark of Covenant on one of the shelves uh later on while they're in the facility. They show a number of a number of little Easter eggs in here, and that's one of them.

SPEAKER_09

Go back again.

SPEAKER_16

But one of the first big ones that we see is them coming up, and they get to a refrigerator again. It's a theme. An icebox. They open it up, and the dude's like, no way. And in the icebox is an alien. And so we assume he's knowing that as the Zaytan.

SPEAKER_08

The little Martian. Yeah, the little uh the green guy from the cave and Fallout 4, uh, the Zaytan from Fallout 3, right?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, but he doesn't care. Nope.

SPEAKER_12

He just yanks out the alien corpse. He's like, a real ice box.

SPEAKER_08

Shoves the corpse aside. Oh my god, ice box.

SPEAKER_16

To be fair, in the wasteland, a cold new Coca-Cola or Sensitasparilla is probably a little bit more valuable than aliens, unless they got a blaster on them.

SPEAKER_08

Right. Oh, yeah. That's weird.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I just thought that was hilarious. All kinds of pop culture lore in there, but the alien corpse was funny. Um, there you do see an alien blaster in there in the warehouse. You see a terracotta soldier, the USS Constitution. Yeah. Constitution's a good thing.

SPEAKER_08

I need to go back. I did not notice any of that. I need to go back to the case.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, no, totally.

SPEAKER_08

Like I'm not actually watching it as carefully as I should be, you know.

SPEAKER_16

The more you watch it, the more you see to an extent. But then also, you know, you also start to tune out a little more after you watch the same episode again and again and check your phone.

SPEAKER_07

True. Yeah. And then you see them pull the tarp off of a beautiful red sports car, and they're so excited they want to give it a try.

SPEAKER_16

Let's see what the baby can do.

SPEAKER_07

And so they take it out. You see it on the tarmac, you figure they're gonna hop out, but it's two guys in power armor, and uh they just start blasting the crap out of this thing with the minigun.

SPEAKER_16

It's so sad. It even had intact tires, intact tires, and these yahoos, these yahoos in the brotherhood. I mean, and you also right before that you see them juggling a grenade, and Max has to be like, don't play with live grenades. They're juggling just a comedy relief, Brotherhood Nights.

SPEAKER_08

Here we go.

SPEAKER_06

Please don't play with grenades inside.

SPEAKER_08

Please do not play with grenades inside, yes, sir.

SPEAKER_16

Yes, sir. Maximus is taking charge, send those to the clerks for sorting. And so then we move to them um setting up and plugging the cold fusion power into a console and starting that up. And it moves back to a squire over there with Dane and asks, What do you think they'll do with it? And Dane says, Nothing good.

SPEAKER_09

What do you think I'll do with it? Nothing good. Nothing good.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. They are Dane at this point is very much questioning what the brotherhood is up to. Like Maximus used to more. Dane is realistic and sees the brotherhood as they are more. And Maximus kind of sees it for what he wants it to be, especially after you know what happened with Lucy and getting back home and trying to make the best of the situation. He wants to be a role model, which you see him doing that there too. So even the way he talks the knight, and then here you have a young knight coming up to him when he is you cuts the max then, and he's shaving, checking himself.

SPEAKER_08

And washing his hands again. There's another hand washing scene.

SPEAKER_16

Exactly. And the squire asks him why you do that. And Max says, Because it's important. And asks, What is our duty to fix a fallen world?

SPEAKER_09

I have that too.

SPEAKER_02

Why do you do that? Because it's important. What is our duty to fix a fallen world? Sometimes, in order to make a big problem something you can handle, you gotta make it small. So we start by bettering ourselves. And you can do that in all sorts of ways, you know, self-discipline, generosity, valor, and not smelling really bad. It's I love that.

SPEAKER_16

It's a good scene. But Dane comes up too, right? Dane comes in next.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

And Dane mentions it's always gonna get dirty again. You know, you get Dane's cynicism in here. It's always gonna get dirty again.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, he was he was polishing his armor.

SPEAKER_16

Yep.

SPEAKER_08

It's just gonna get dirty again.

SPEAKER_21

It's always gonna get dirty again.

SPEAKER_03

Better to polish dirty steel and have it stay clean. Used to quote the codecs to each other as a joke. I've seen what it's like out there. The brotherhood is as good as it gets. I'm just trying to make it better.

SPEAKER_21

What couldn't have been all bad out there? He met that girl.

SPEAKER_03

She left.

SPEAKER_21

And maybe she's still out there.

SPEAKER_03

I have duties here.

SPEAKER_08

Is Dean jealous of his romantic involvement with Lucy?

SPEAKER_16

I I don't think it's that at all. You know, they're they're brothers in arms. Dane knows how much Lucy meant to Max and the way he acted, the way he went to rescue her. And Dane knows that that was making Maximus a better person. So I think that's why they bring him up is because they want to remind Maximus this you have seen better. You know that things can be better out there. This was an idealist. Funny because Dane previously. Previously, in season one, one of the one were arguing, hey, don't get carried away, Max. And now Max has gone too far the other way. And he's like, hey, don't get carried away, Max.

unknown

You know?

SPEAKER_08

You keep getting carried away in the wrong directions.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, one way or the other. But uh, but Maximus, she left. Because we know what happened. She had to go with the ghoul, she only had a limited chance. Max would have gone with her, but things happened where they did. He was knocked out, and he came too, and that's they thought he's the one who killed Moldaver. And so he got the glory there, and that's why he's in the position he's in now.

SPEAKER_08

Yep, I have that too.

SPEAKER_21

Listen, I've read the comms. Quintus called for this meeting, but he didn't tell the Commonwealth. He's breaking chain of command. Max, Commonwealth isn't going to let him seize power without a war. Is that what you want?

SPEAKER_03

Use it to yourself. There's nowhere safe out there. Not as long as there's people out there. If the Brotherhood can keep history from repeating itself, my job is to help them do that.

SPEAKER_08

Yep. Help them not repeat that.

SPEAKER_16

Now the Brotherhood has set up date, set up base in Area 51. And they are calling a conclave. They're bringing in the other chapters. So this happened pretty quick. We knew that Quintus wanted to unite the Brotherhood. We've got Yosemite, Coronado, Grand Canyon. And of course, what's the name of Maximus' chapter? I'm suddenly forgetting.

SPEAKER_05

Mojave.

SPEAKER_08

And Coronado is San Diego. So Yosemite is up north, right? Or Bay or halfway up? Yep.

SPEAKER_16

Yosemite we know. That's up up in the mountains, yep. San Fernando chapter originally, even though obviously they're based in Mojave now.

SPEAKER_08

And when they say the valley, that's what they mean. The San Fernando Valley. Is that right? And in California, the Valley Girls or whatever. That's San Fernando Valley. Okay. Yep.

SPEAKER_16

Ray of the Experiment.

SPEAKER_08

Hollywood.

SPEAKER_16

California geography.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, just over the hills from Hollywood. Yep. But it just it just goes to show all the different, like he's right, they were fractured into a bunch of different little factions. You know, all those places are not that far from each other, yet they're all looks like led in vastly different methods.

SPEAKER_16

And in the world post-war, even though the brotherhood can travel better than most with vertebrates. A few airships, uh more than expected. You would not think the brotherhood had that many airships in the past, but well, and and vertebrates and I assume they have some sort of land tanks or something at least. Well, they probably some chapters do, but we don't actually see them at all, really, here.

SPEAKER_08

It's just possible to have few.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, they don't need tanks because they got power armor, you're right.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, and I mean in in in the game, as we know, while there are a few instances of vehicles, they're very few. Because tires have rotted out, they don't work anymore, coolant, etc.

SPEAKER_08

That's why they made the comment about the intact tires on the car.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that's why I mentioned that.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Because it would have actually been drivable, because so few are. But and again, the airships, we know the Brotherhood in Tactics had multiple airships, but they didn't have them for a long time. One of the things that made the Commonwealth chapter special after Maxim came up in Fallout 3 and 4, and they had the Pridwin, is that they actually took a couple years to build that from the remains of the base and stuff around in in the Capitol Wasteland. That's how they rebuilt it and created it, and that's partly what made them the dominant chapter. So the idea that other chapters now have airships, I don't know. I think it's kind of a bit of a just they look cool, so let's give them airships, right?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, I don't I don't think we need to get bogged down in the you know the actual factual And the Yosemite and the Grand Canyon faction seem kind of odd. Uh, because those are two incredibly remote areas.

SPEAKER_16

Well, the Brotherhood has been hiding to a large extent. After the way things went down, a lot of the chapters, if they weren't hiding under sandstorms, they were in remote locations, right? To an extent where the NCR couldn't reach them as easily or the Legion. That might be part of it. I don't know. But I guess they're just picking people nearby that they could actually reach and communicate with. Now, he mentions dozens of chapters, and we only see these four here. And of course, we're missing one of the big ones, the fifth, the Commonwealth, technically the leadership of the Brotherhood right now.

SPEAKER_05

Rotro.

SPEAKER_16

So Quintus is speechifying. I don't know. Do you have any things from the speech that you want to share, Andrew?

SPEAKER_08

Um, I you just like that they let you fuck robots.

SPEAKER_16

That was one squire, and he was well within his rights.

SPEAKER_08

I I like that.

SPEAKER_12

You know, if I was gonna say something from a speech, that's what I would save too. No.

SPEAKER_16

Uh so Quintus greets them all and he talks about where they're all from, how it's been decades since they gathered to renew our shared and noble purpose. Thanks to the efforts of the knights of our chapter, the axes of power has shifted in the Brotherhood. When he says that, of course, one of them says, Where the heck is the Commonwealth, Quintus? They should be here. Quintus knows what would happen. If they were here, what would happen? Hmm? They would take the relic and give us nothing in return. Does that seem fair to you?

SPEAKER_08

Taxation without representation.

SPEAKER_16

Exactly. But it would lead to civil war, he says, with the Commonwealth, and everyone's laughing. They'd kick our butts.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

But Quintus rallies and says, Not if we stand together. With the power of the cold fusion diode, we can power airships, armor. We can defeat the commonwealth united under a common banner. And of course, you know, the others aren't really having it. They're like, Yeah, your banner, Quintus. You just want to be in charge. This is where we learned about how much the chapters have changed, how much the brotherhood has kind of devolved from how we've known like the stronger chapters. So Eusemite talks about how theirs doesn't go into any of the religious stuff. And then we've got which one's the Robus one? Is that the Eusemite one or the Grand Canyon one?

SPEAKER_07

The Grand Canyon. I think the the Coronado one is the guy that is naysaying Quintus's ideas.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. So they're all talking about that and they're not coming together. They just start arguing and fighting. And they're saying we wasted our resources. And Quintus, of course, says there's something we all agree on. And then dramatic swell of music. Power. And a bunch of Brotherhood come in, carrying crates full of fusion cores.

SPEAKER_08

How much is that? Or how many do you have? Enough to power all of human history.

SPEAKER_16

More than human history could ever consume. Yeah, and of course.

SPEAKER_11

There is something we all agree on. Power.

SPEAKER_19

How many of those can you make?

SPEAKER_11

More than all of human history could ever consume.

SPEAKER_19

The Codex does say that violence against a fellow brother is forbidden. But I suppose the Codex is open to interpretation.

SPEAKER_11

Fuck the Commonwealth. Then it's decided. Let's drink to it. Fuck the Commonwealth.

SPEAKER_08

That guy just likes screaming, fuck the Commonwealth.

SPEAKER_16

He is really excited now. But they're they're drunk with power. Like they see that and they're like, holy, this would turn the tide. Their greed overwhelms their common sense because up to this moment, they're all like, this is ridiculous. We could never stand against the Commonwealth. We don't want a civil war. If we unite without involving the Commonwealth, they will come lay down the law.

SPEAKER_08

So that implies that they have all of the power armor and everything they could ever need. They just couldn't power it. They just didn't have the means to make it go. But now that they can make it go, they can just pop them into all the extra power armor they have laying around and go toe-to-toe with the Commonwealth.

SPEAKER_16

Probably. That would be a logical way to look at it. They have more power armor, but they needed power for it because fusion's cores are scarce. So they have to be careful how much and where they use it. But not just that, we're talking about vertebrates and vehicles, talking about other weapons. You know, there are a number of weapons that are powered by cores as well. And then you have all the arms they've uncovered in Area 51. Because you see the one holding like a cryolator type weapon, too, in the Area 51 warehouse. Like there's all this stuff.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, cool. Yeah, lots of lots of usage.

SPEAKER_16

We briefly go back to Lucy and Tunic Girl, and they're talking, and Lucy says, I like your outfit. And she says, Gracias. Well, and Lucy says, You speak Latin? Good for you. I'm a school teacher. Education is important. And she looks at her and says, You're a kindly profligate.

SPEAKER_15

I like your outfit. Gotcha. You speak Latin? Good for you. I'm a school teacher myself, so education is very important to me. You're a kindly profligate. Thank you. I'm headed to Las Vegas. You shouldn't. Oh, I I have to. I'm looking for someone. You should go home. I don't want to see you get raped by the wrong people. I'll bear that in mind.

SPEAKER_08

Odd.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, how foreboding. So, like, we know here what this all means, you know, people watching. Kindly profligate. Like, we know profligates are. We know she's legion. We know what this all means.

SPEAKER_08

And Lucy should have been like, hmm, that's an odd word to use.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. By the wrong people, too.

SPEAKER_08

I mean, I yes there are there right people by which she could be raped?

SPEAKER_16

No.

SPEAKER_08

Do they exist?

SPEAKER_16

No. And yet, the way she was raised, guess what?

SPEAKER_08

Yes, there are.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. It's horrifying. Like that line says so much about the status of women in the Legion. And this the way she was raised and her beliefs. And there's part of me going, like, why isn't she stopping Lucy at this point? Like, don't come any further. This will happen to you. Because she has been a slave for life. She is brainwashed and thinking, this is good. These are the right people. And Lucy's a profligate, but if she comes with her, maybe she'll even help become part of it. She's not really thinking about what's wrong with her at home. I mean, of course, some people, there are certainly some people who were not raised in the Legion who would rebel and escape given a chance. But from what you see of this woman, she most likely has been with Eloisian a long, long time and has been her spirit broken.

SPEAKER_08

She's a slave and the person either who was, I don't know, slave with her or retrieving her or something. And she is outside of the watchful eye of the Legion. Why is she going back? Just go.

SPEAKER_16

That's just it. And I like a more recent slave most likely would. Someone who had had a life outside the Legion.

SPEAKER_08

She would just die of dehydration out in the desert.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, better the devil you know. But to an extent, I do feel that maybe she just has a broken spirit and she's just been raised a slave or a slave so long she doesn't think of any other life at this point.

SPEAKER_08

Knows nothing else, right?

SPEAKER_16

And then we hear a twig snap, and Lucy's all and hello, how she knows something's going on. Then we cut from the scene back to Vault 31.

SPEAKER_09

Back to the Frosties.

SPEAKER_16

I like that name, the Frosties. So they start talking, and Norm is trying to gain order here, right?

SPEAKER_09

Yes.

SPEAKER_18

I assume some of the things he said seem downright outlandish, but look at where we are. We're standing in the product of his life's work. We are his life's work. Last account for something. This is Bud's final test. If I can lead you all to finding our way out of here, we'll have proven ourselves worthy to carry on Vault Tech's corporate strategy together. Those of you who work quickly, and as a team, will receive these Meridots. Meridots?

SPEAKER_09

Ooh.

SPEAKER_16

Meridot. Yeah. So Norm, in order to gain control, no, he's trying to stop them. He's like, listen to me. And they're all like, wait, yeah. They just suddenly realize again they don't really even know who this guy is yet. Just that he's from the vault and says it's reclamation day. But they say, Who even are you? And he says, I'm the product of 200 years of genetic engineering, part of a race of super managers. And all of you have been selected to be my staff. You think we've been left locked in Vault 31 by accident? You think Bud Askins makes mistakes?

SPEAKER_08

D Bud Askins make a mistake? How dare you?

SPEAKER_13

Listen to me! Who even are you? Seriously.

SPEAKER_18

I'm the product of 200 years of genetic engineering, part of a race of super managers. All of you have been selected to be my staff. You think we've been left locked in Vault 31 by accident? You think Bud Askins made mistakes?

SPEAKER_14

Never. No chance.

SPEAKER_09

Never.

SPEAKER_14

Oh my god, Claudia, we're trying to have a conversation.

SPEAKER_09

Shut up, Claudia God.

SPEAKER_16

They are so awful to her. But yeah, so that's when he invokes the name of Bud Askins, and he invoked the idea of taking control, which they are. Most of these guys are staff. He says, You've been selecting to be my staff. So suddenly they're getting a merit-based thing. This is what they've been trained for. We know these are very much middle managers, and maybe the more senior of them, like Betty, like Hank, like Bud, had more responsibility already. And then the other clip he played is the same. You know, he's Norm admits, yeah, some of this is outlandish, but look at where we are. This is the product of Bud's life's work. Has to carry something forever. And then he pulls out Merit Dots. You guys, merit dots.

SPEAKER_18

Those of you who work quickly and as a team will receive these merit dots. Merit dots?

SPEAKER_08

Merit dots? They are very excited about that totally meaningless gesture.

SPEAKER_16

It's just so classic Vault Tech. We we joke about how things, you know, they can be brainwashed at times, but honestly, working for Vault Tech, even the pre-war ones, Vault Tech had its way of getting its you know hooks in you.

SPEAKER_08

Merit dots. Like a little circle of paper.

SPEAKER_07

They're band-aids. Yeah, circular band-aid. Yeah, little dot band-aids.

SPEAKER_16

It's perfect. That's corporate life, right? You want the good review.

SPEAKER_06

Band-aids.

SPEAKER_16

So they start hashing a plan on how to get out of there. And as soon as he gives them a purpose and takes charge like that, they respond. Okay, they want to succeed here. And so Clark mentions he took notes about ventilation. He's looking at ventilation. Someone else mentions fire suppression. Someone says about burrowing underground. I'll hack the overseers console. We can ride protocols like they are. You can tell that these guys, yes, but they're not exactly um leaders, but they've been trained. They have some training. They have initiative. They're gonna work through this together. They were very much leadership development program. And I believe that wraps up that scene, right?

SPEAKER_08

I believe so. Hank's doing an interview next, I believe.

SPEAKER_07

Steve is his name, Steve, I think it was. He pulls him out of the VIP cryo vault.

SPEAKER_08

Cryopod, he thaws around.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, so this is somebody that paid big bucks to uh to be preserved. So when he got thought out, he was expecting that everything was good to go and he was free.

SPEAKER_08

Is this reclamation day? Right is it reclamation day?

SPEAKER_04

Yes, it is reclamation day, just not quite the way we thought it would be. I've been running an experiment here and it's not going well. The mice are so small and tiny. It's a very fiddly business. I think there's been a confirmed mistake. I signed up for the Voltec Premium Elite class. Did you read the fine print? Well, I didn't. I prefer the classics. Both habits, I guess. I am optimistic that we will be able to work out.

SPEAKER_08

So what's the I didn't read the fine print. I like the classics reference. What is it?

SPEAKER_16

So he's simply saying that it doesn't matter what contract he signed at this point. He doesn't matter that the guy is Vault Tech Elite Plus. Hank is on a mission, and uh apparently he's moved from the small livestock to the bigger livestock. The mice are so small. They're just so small. Yep, it's it's very fiddly business.

SPEAKER_08

He doesn't have a small enough uh what are we calling it? MCD.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, an MCD. Exactly. But no, the guy has no idea what he's talking about. He offers him some champagne and all that. And then Hank gets to the point. Because Steve here is out of sorts, but he's having champagne, and Hank says, I noticed on your file you had a family, but you only bought a ticket for one. And Steve says it w it was expensive.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, that's a little bit rough.

SPEAKER_16

But Hank we know how Hank thinks. And family is important to him. Even though he wants to control his, he's down with his control. It says, You can't put a price on family, Steve. We're very clear about that in the Vault Tech advertisement. Family is the first building block of civilization. And this is where he goes on, and he pulls out the device and he sticks it onto our buddy Steve here. And he says, you know, Steve is of course starting to freak out. What are you doing? He's like, I'm improving a piece of outdated technology. It hasn't worked out so far, but if at first you don't succeed, turn up the thing, turn up the thing. Steve starts rattling. You try again.

SPEAKER_04

I noticed on your file that you had a family, but you only bought a ticket for one. It was expensive. Can't put a price on family, Steve. We were very clear about that in the advertisements. Family is the first building block of civilization. What are you doing? I'm improving civilization. It hasn't worked out so far. If at first you don't succeed, try try again.

SPEAKER_07

If at first you don't succeed, splat. Try try again.

SPEAKER_16

Oh, the worst. And it's Lee in chat mentions poor Hank's wife. So poor Steve's family says Philior. Poor Hank's wife says Lee. And that's true. Like Hank's there talking about family. Yeah, what did he do with his wife? Well, why did he do it? Because she tried to take his family away from him. Lucy and Norm. She tried to run away with them. And that was the ultimate betrayal. So again, this is what motivates him. You know, Vaultek, whoever he's working for, and the family. So we are back with Lucy coming up on a cabin. And she walks up and it's a Legion cabin, and she stops. And then suddenly she hears more people around her. And then she is surrounded by Legion. Hello?

SPEAKER_08

The costumes were great.

SPEAKER_05

Right?

SPEAKER_08

I like the costume. You see the uh coyote hat. You see all sorts of neat stuff on the Legion soldiers there. What's his name? Who wears that shit at the Vulpus?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Vulpus and Culte.

SPEAKER_08

Is Vulpus a name or a title?

SPEAKER_16

Vulpus actually means fox in Latin.

SPEAKER_08

It means fox.

SPEAKER_16

So is it a fox like technically he's part of the Frumentari?

SPEAKER_08

Was that his name?

SPEAKER_16

Okay, I think his title is Vexilaria. Sorry, I'm spitballing here, but I think he's a Vexilarius and he's part of the of the Frumentari, which is the spy network.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, so Vulpus is his name then.

SPEAKER_16

Yes, Vulpus and Culta. They're all surrounding Lucy with pointy spears and Legion armor. And she says, Hello. I realized you have our cultural differences, but just so you know, I am nice.

SPEAKER_08

But just so you know.

SPEAKER_12

I love that.

SPEAKER_08

She tries to you know take the attention out of the situation immediately.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

But at the same time, that automatically lets them know that she is zero threat and easy to do.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. She tries again and again to use her charisma and her vault tech counseling training and and de-escalization training. And again and again it doesn't really work.

SPEAKER_08

But she's trying to the throwaway stat of this show.

SPEAKER_16

She is a speech build. It just wasn't it worked great on fellow Vault Tech, but she did train in the real world.

SPEAKER_05

And even though you lose a vault.

SPEAKER_16

Right. Our girl has grown up a lot. Like she is not as naive as she was, but she still is the same person. She still has that core Lucy, and it's important she holds onto it, right? At least for her to stay who she is. And that's something we talked about a lot the first season or going into this one. That we hope Lucy as a character doesn't lose who she is. Because yes, she will have to grow up and become more worldly. But if she changes too much, it'll kind of change the core of her character. And maybe give it enough time, she will be more like the ghoul. But hopefully they meet somewhere in the middle. At least that's what I hope.

SPEAKER_08

So we don't do we see anything that happens to Lucy? Do they snagger or anything? Or is it just blackout?

SPEAKER_07

No, yeah, it just goes to the next scene.

SPEAKER_16

Dramatic moment. Yep. And we're back with the freeze pop gang with the Icy's.

SPEAKER_08

The the the frosty gang. Uh don't mess with Mr. in between. I like that song a lot. But I noticed it wasn't the Bing or whatever his brother's name is who did the version that's on the the Yeah, no, this is familiar with.

SPEAKER_16

This is Johnny Mercer. The song is Accentuate the Positive, I think it's called. Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. Don't mess with Mr. In Between.

SPEAKER_09

Don't mess with Mr. Inbetween.

SPEAKER_08

You gotta. Yeah, um it was a different version than I was used to.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Yeah, it's a good one. But I think it was Johnny Mercer. And actually, I wrote down all the names of the songs in my notes, though. Johnny Mercer and the Pied Pipers.

SPEAKER_05

Cool.

SPEAKER_16

That was kind of another juxtaposition track. You know, they're stiff upper lip, they're trying to find a way out, and they're doing a human ladder because they're trying to get up. They found the ventilation shaft to a trapdoor.

SPEAKER_08

They're industrious and inventive and teamwork and everything you would want a managerial team to do in like a team. This is literally every corporate team building activity designer's wet dream here. This particular activity. Teamwork to get us out of this sealed vault.

SPEAKER_16

Trust that you're not gonna fall, as opposed to a trust fall. But then, as makeup for the time. Up and they say, lead the way, boss. To Norm, you know, because Norm's taking charge. He's the one he gets to go first. And this is where we see so much growth with Norm because we know originally when Lucy was leaving the vault and he couldn't go with her. And he had to back down, and he said, Because I I'm a coward. And yet here he has to make a decision. Everything he's gone through, everything he's discovered, what he's just endured, he is going to uh lead the way. So he steals himself despite his fear of leaving the vault, despite his fear of the outside, he climbs up. I mean, there's a lot of banging and and awkwardness, and it's it's funny. But it's also like such a moment, right?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. Well, it just shows that he's not a natural athlete or leader. It's a struggle for him to fill this role. And he's awkward in getting into that position, but he is driven to do so.

SPEAKER_16

Exactly.

SPEAKER_08

Shows how our character is expanding a little.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, exactly. He's he's grown to the situation quite a bit. And he has to, and this is also after everything he's injured. Like he's still feeling weak. He still hasn't had a solid meal in a while.

SPEAKER_08

And he hasn't had water in two weeks or whatever.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. Yep. Trying to make it.

SPEAKER_08

Watering has is licking the algae off of pipes or whatever.

SPEAKER_16

But he gets out, he's first went out the pipe, and he is just in shock. You see him climb out, and then there's behind him, staggering, struggling, blinded by the light. I mean, Norm has never been out in real sunlight. That's all new for him. And he has to climb the rise. He is in shock. And of course, one of the other ones, you probably got it this recorded, didn't you?

SPEAKER_14

Out of the ladder! Lead the way, boss. Oh man, the mall's gone.

SPEAKER_08

It's beautiful. It's so dirty. Oh man, the mall's gone. I love that.

SPEAKER_16

That guy's hilarious. Like, he has he has a lot of the best little one-liners for the vaulty. Is there?

SPEAKER_08

The shut up Claudia guy.

SPEAKER_16

He's awful, but he's funny. But that's what he cares about for him.

SPEAKER_12

The mall's gone. They just, it's 200 years later. They've survived a nuclear apocalypse.

SPEAKER_16

The mall's gone.

SPEAKER_08

Like one of them is like, ooh, it's so dirty.

SPEAKER_16

And the way it's contrasted. Because Norm says it's beautiful. Like.

SPEAKER_08

This is a different angle that we've seen, though, but it does give us a good proximity of where the vaults are located, but it looks like a different place than where Lucy came out. So Lucy came out on the south side of the Santa Monica Pier, and they were on the north side.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, this is an air vent side or something. The sprawling vault network. And yeah, so they're they're a little bit north of the pier when you see them looking out over where the mall would have been.

SPEAKER_08

And that's that's the Santa Monica Pier, right? That's what that is.

SPEAKER_16

I believe so again. Lee shared a picture, it's a different perspective, but it's right nearby. I think it's the same site from the other side.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, it's where Lucy comes out, just different, totally like miles away.

SPEAKER_16

And then we switch from there back to the brotherhood. And it's they're having a bit of a celebration now. They're celebrating their compact and the fact that they're gonna join together and they're getting all the power and uniting the brotherhood again. And so they're celebrating, it's we've got a couple guys in power armor fighting.

SPEAKER_07

Rock'em sakem robot.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. Little rock'em sake him, little power armor.

SPEAKER_07

Like pop his head up.

SPEAKER_16

Which I love seeing it because that obviously at the gato we do rock'em sock and power armor fighting. So that that was amusing. I'm like, yeah, this is so this is so fallout. But they're cheering and grunting, and Maxmas, you can tell he's a little bit like again, looking at what's going on. Like, is this really for the best? You know, is this really who we are?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I it's really neat watching him sort of feel his feelings about the is he trapped? Like, is like the he doesn't really have anywhere else to go, but so you know, he wants to make the best of it. But they he also sees that this is a crazy or end, like they're I don't know, just him looking at all these like buffoons. He's like, Come on, guys, we can be better, you know. It's just interesting to see him sort of develop like this.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's definitely embarrassed by the behavior a bit. I think you're totally right on that. Like, he wants the brotherhood to be better in the same way that Quintus wants the brotherhood to be better, but it's different. Whereas Quintus wants the brotherhood to be better for his own power and glory and his vision of what it should be. Whereas Maximus wants it to be something to aspire to. He wants to be that's what he was always wanted to be. He wanted to be a hero. It's like when he got the power armor and he's able to help people, he wants to be able to help people. I think the brother can do that.

SPEAKER_08

And yet we have to remind ourselves how he got that power armor under sort of like you know, questionable circumstances.

SPEAKER_16

Very questionable circumstances, yeah. He is the one that I love that that's his suit. He is the wearing the same power armor with the gash, you know.

SPEAKER_08

That's his has the bear mark on it, yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. So they're fighting, and they're all, you know, who's next and challenging. That guy, tall guy, comes up to Maximus.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, this guy's huge. He's he asked him about uh you the guy who uh took on Moldaver.

SPEAKER_07

You the one who killed that NCR bitch, moldover. Moldaver.

SPEAKER_02

I did that. I bet I can mash you. Probably. All right, let me get my armor. No armor.

SPEAKER_08

I bet I could mash you.

SPEAKER_16

Well, this guy is huge. I mean, he this is a Viking size dude. And he, you can tell he is the lead for his chapter. So the way that you edit edited the clips, there's obviously cut out a lot of the pausing because there's so many pauses in these. It's it's quite a tense scene.

SPEAKER_08

The guy is lots of standing and staring down. Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. The guy is staring at him, and and Max is like, he's just like, yeah, he doesn't want to fight. He's like, yeah, you you probably could. And the guy's challenging him. And he looks over to Quintus. And Quintus gives the nod. Yes, you should fight this guy. He knows what's happening here. And Quintus for political power is saying you've got to establish dominance. But he's dangerous, but that's because Quintus doesn't really care about Maximus. He just cares about what he can do with the sword. He doesn't actually think that highly of him. He just thinks about how he can use him. And that's what the situation is here. And so Maximus, all right, let me get my armor. And Viking dude wants to go bareback.

SPEAKER_08

Which I was uh thinking, you know, phrasing. Interesting phrasing there, bud.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Just dangerous, dangerous. And he fights dirty anyhow. Right. You know, they're like no weapons, no armor, nothing, and he fucking brings a knife.

SPEAKER_16

Because the dude doesn't have honor, and that's what we're showing here. A lot of the brotherhood doesn't have honor. It's simply about power. You know, and that's how some of these chapters work. And honestly, that's how Maximus' Brotherhood works too. He just managed to ascend through the way things went over with Moldover. But um, but yeah, so they're fighting, and obviously the guy is significantly stronger than Maximus. Max doesn't have much of a chance against him, but he's scrappy, he's tough, he's agile, and he does. He starts getting back in, he's getting some punches, and the guy pulls on a knife. Because he doesn't care about the rules. He he's just there to win. And Max uses the dude and fighting you know, uses the dude's weight, and they're fighting and wrestling, and he manages to use the guy's weight as he uh fights off the knife to actually pierce him.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, uses the guy's uh girth against himself. Ha ha.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Maximus has been through a lot. And as this happens, and Maximus just killed a guy in supposedly a moment of celebration, a thing because I mean that's what had to happen. Didn't have much choice in the circumstance. And yet it shows that the Brotherhood is not who Maximus wants them to be, and Maximus is realizing more and more, and Dane is watching, and Dane sees Max fighting and about to kill this guy and just walks away because disappointed.

SPEAKER_08

Everyone's disappointed in everything these days. Everyone's embarrassed.

SPEAKER_16

And there's just not much they can do. Max is just surviving. Like a lot of what he's doing is is survival. Reacting versus acting. And when he gets a chance, he's gotten stronger now. He is take taking some action on his own, but he's more of a follower. So even though he wants to lead and be an example, he's still taking orders. And that's about to change.

SPEAKER_08

Well, uh you have to because what's the alternative? Where else are you gonna go? You need water, you need food. These people have water and food.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. No, he he as he says before, you know, they're the best chance the wasteland has found. I mean, that he's seen at least with what's there now.

SPEAKER_08

Of course, because he's so embarrassed by them.

SPEAKER_16

Well, this episode, I think he's starting to realize that more and more. Like when we come in, what's happened over the last couple weeks or whatever, that Maximus said, okay, I can work with Quintus, and Quintus is manipulating him, excuse me. And so he's making the best situation, and he wants to lead by example, and so he's buying in. He's buying in, he's pushing down his feelings and buying in. But obviously, this episode, throughout the course of it, he sees again and again and again that his work to make the brotherhood better is he's got a long road if it's gonna happen.

SPEAKER_08

In vain, probably.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. So we've got this moment, this uh life and death struggle. He's just killed the guy, and suddenly a vertebird comes in. And they're all looking up. And it's a Commonwealth Brotherhood. Uh Commonwealth vertebred. Uh-oh. And Camal gustout.

SPEAKER_00

Sorry to interrupt. Paladin Harkness, who is on from the Commonwealth. I understand we're discussing a civil war. I must not have gotten my invitation. And yet here you are. Welcome.

SPEAKER_08

Harkness, I believe he said. Harkness. Yep. That's a name I'm very familiar with via Fallout Shelter, which means it is a classic Fallout character from probably Fallout 3, I'm assuming. Yes. Who remind me who Harkness is in Fallout 3, the game?

SPEAKER_07

He's the the synth? The head of security at Rivet City. Oh, the okay, right. And so now he's he's the head of security at the rivet city.

SPEAKER_08

So, okay, wow. So are we to believe that Camel is a synth?

SPEAKER_16

Well, it's funny because when his name is Harkness and he makes this entrance, we're like, oh, is that supposed to be the Harkness Rivet City? But that Harkness was not part of the Brotherhood. No, and keep in mind that would have been gosh, how much earlier if that was it's 20 years earlier.

SPEAKER_08

So 50, but yeah, it's not quite 50.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. Yeah, he was he was he belonged to the institute, not the brotherhood.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. So why then use that ear-perking name?

SPEAKER_16

Probably just as a reference. Harkness is a cool name. And they they try to one thing we see in the Fallout series, they try to use names multiple times just to kind of maintain the aesthetic to have similarity. A lot of Steve's.

SPEAKER_08

There are a lot of Steve's.

SPEAKER_16

There are. But I think that's a bit of it. I also just that they like the reference. It's also a Doctor Who reference. Harkness, by the way. Um, he's a major character in Doctor Who. So and I don't know if that's where it came from. Oh, what no, it wouldn't have, because actually, yes, it might have, because Fall Through was released in 2008, and Harkness had been introduced in Doctor Who in like 2006 or so. Maybe 2007.

SPEAKER_07

He got a spin-off season, uh, didn't he?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he got four actually. Two two TV seasons and two miniseries. No, it's pretty awesome. That's with Torchwood.

SPEAKER_08

Oh wait, I've heard of Torchwood. That's a Doctor Who spin-off?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Yeah. It's uh it's part of the Doctor Who world, and then they got they got a spin-off based on it.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. I watched all of those episodes, but I couldn't watch but just one or two Doctor Who's before I change the channel.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. You might like some seasons more than others, Ray. Like there are some that might appeal to you and some that definitely wouldn't, probably partly depending on who plays the doctor and stuff. Torchwood is a little more grounded, but I do feel like you might like some of the Peter Capaldi doctor. He's just a little bit more serious in a way that would work, at least most of the time. But yeah, so it's awesome. The Comroll shows up, like, uh oh, they're here. Disruption. And Quintus just rolls with it. He's like, and yet here you are. Welcome. And that's where it wraps.

SPEAKER_07

Well, you've got to the shot where Max is standing next to the body.

SPEAKER_16

Yep.

SPEAKER_07

With the knife sticking out of it. What an introduction, right? Yeah, Harkness looks over at him, looks at the body, and then just gives him a nod.

SPEAKER_08

Like, yeah. Gives him a wink, like a knowing at a boy, you know.

SPEAKER_16

Or simply, I know, I think it's almost questioning too. Like, what has been happening here? But oh, you must be the top dog. Like, I feel like there's a little bit of both there, which we're gonna learn more about next episode. And then it goes into Chubby Checker's Let's Twist Again for the ending.

SPEAKER_06

Come on, everybody!

SPEAKER_08

I go play the whole song.

SPEAKER_16

And then this ending uh has some Legion references to like they often throw in references. So it pulls out for the end credit sequence, and it pans out from Cooper Howard movie poster, The Revenge of Brutus, which I think we actually saw in the kitchen of his house last episode briefly. Revenge of Brutus, but it's he's got a it's got a Roman theme. And as it pulls out from that, it reveals a massive Caesar's Legion camp set up inside a sports area, set up crucified, with crucified and see our troopers and such. And it pulls out and we get the usual information.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, this one was a football stadium. You could even see the field goal post and everything. And he pulled out on them. The crucifixes were right under the field goal post on the far end. It was really weird.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. It like a lot of them, it wasn't specific, but it was thematic, full of references. So, like the last one had all the prim references, this one had just a bunch of Legion references.

SPEAKER_08

I did like, as the camera was pulling out, it like got behind it, got so pulled across the entire football field and then up through the stands. And then as you see, like the backs of some of the skeletons and the stands, they had like those foam war number one fingers, but they were like cappy style gloves, like sort of Mickey Mouse style, cappy, whatever gloves. I I thought that was a really good reference to. I like all the outros, all the little things they weave in. I need to go back and watch that scene with all the artifacts and I want to see all the little Yeah, there are a lot of them.

SPEAKER_16

Actually, while we're talking that, then let's hit up the I got a little list of the Easter eggs that we saw in this series. We hit most of them going through. Yes. Obviously, the nuclear winner dialogue. It's clear. Uh the nuke. Oh, I actually wrote it down. Mark 28 ordinance. So the kind that we see in Fallout 4. Obviously, the new plague reference, the Easter eggs in the warehouse, which we covered all those. Wasteland Survival Guide shows up in the issue in the episode. I don't know if you saw that.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, where?

SPEAKER_16

The Brotherhood Guy in the Watchtower is reading issue two, the insect repellent special of the Wasteland Survival Guide when the other elders arrived.

SPEAKER_07

As he sits on the can.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. The toilet, yeah. I said in the watchtower, but yeah, technically there. Also mentioning the outfits, ahead of time, a lot of people were speculating. Wait, is that Elder Maxim? Because Harkness's outfit, he's wearing a it's a trooper coat, but it's very similar to the battle coat. Yeah, which everyone loves. And also, Quintus's red robes at this point, the ones he's wearing now, even more before, looks almost exactly like the robe uh the Elder Lions wore in Fallout 3.

SPEAKER_08

The purple ones from Fallout 1, you know?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, really like the ones in Fallout 3, I would say. But obviously, Fallout 3, they were much closer in a lot of their design aesthetic to Fallout 1 at that point. Then they broadened and got a little bit more atomic era retro for 4 and 76. Obviously, the Profligate we mentioned is a New Vegas reference. And the final one, and I don't know if this counts or whatever, but I was searching uh golden rule in Fallout dialogues, and Deacon actually mentions a bit about the Golden Rule in Fallout 4, one of my favorite companions. Yeah, if you've got negative affinity with Deacon and he's not happy with you, he's basically like, What about the golden rule? I thought that was cool. I'd never caught that until I searched it.

SPEAKER_08

I I wouldn't have put that together. I think the golden rule is just kind of like an omnipotence.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, yeah. And then music we s heard this episode. We got You Belong to Me, uh, which is starting during the opening with Shady Sands. We've got Lazy Day Blues by Bert Whedon with Lucy and the Ghoul. We've got Secrets by the Dale Sisters, which is playing when they enter Area 51. The song's called Secrets by the Dale Sisters. Accentuate the Positive by Johnny Mercer, which we know from the game, and then Let's Twist Again by Chubby Checker. So only one of these were from the game, although we got some of the background soundtrack music during the episode. The doo-doo doo doo doo one that you might remember from the game. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

If you haven't listened to the show ever on headphones, I've been doing that while pulling sound clips this season. The sound design is actually really fucking great too. So if you haven't listened to the show on headphones, watch some of your favorite scenes on headphones, close your eyes and like listen to it. They really put some work into the sound.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I haven't done that this season, but first season I listened to the whole thing. One of my viewings was headphones, and it is. It's like being in the game. That's where you catch, like you're saying, the sound design. You got spatial sound. There's so much of the bear.

SPEAKER_08

I swear they used the sound for the Yao Guys for the Bear sound effect in that first scene, you know, in the first season. Like I think they literally use some of the same sound files.

SPEAKER_07

You gotta imagine they would.

SPEAKER_16

It just makes sense, right? They have all their sound designers gonna pull from somewhere. Why not pull from the official sound effects designer?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, totally.

SPEAKER_16

But that wraps the episode. So, what'd you guys think? Better than the first? Did it leave you wanting more? I feel like, I mean, obviously, there were a ton of cliffhangers in this one. I I personally enjoyed this one more than the first. The first set up some good stuff, and it started a little bit slow. Like really the Ghoul and Lucy stuff was in some ways the slowest, but we met the Legion. So we got a cliffhanger with her, and we got a cliffhanger with the Commonwealth Brotherhood showing up, and we got so much Brotherhood lore here, talking about chapters and stuff. So I think this was one of my favorite episodes going into the season. I've when it aired a lot of other people, I heard them saying, ah, this one was boring, but I really liked it.

SPEAKER_08

You really dive into Max's psyche this episode. That's what all this is is about his development, I think. A lot. Which, you know, is great because he was not in either barely in or not in the first episode at all, right?

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, not in at all.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Not at all, yeah.

SPEAKER_16

He didn't get flashbacks this episode. I just remembered that. So I almost feel remember how I talked last episode about how they're stretched a little bit too thin now. The only vaulties we got were Norm and the Frosties. And then we got Lucy and the Ghoul, and we got Max. That's four locations, but we didn't get the other Vaulties, and we didn't have any flashbacks. And I think that's how they're balancing. They realize, okay, we can only do so many settings. Like pick four, but don't go for a full five or six in any given episode. We'll see if they stick to that. I think that they might for the most part as the show goes on.

SPEAKER_08

Well, then it just becomes a math equation. You know, like, well, we do four, we've got these four storylines, got four play locations. Okay, we do this one in this episode, that one that okay, boom. Ten episodes, there we go. Yeah, good way to write a write a series, I guess.

SPEAKER_16

Beautiful. Anything else you wanted to mention about the episode, Ray?

SPEAKER_07

Uh no. I think that was that was it.

SPEAKER_16

Well then good. So this was episode two, the golden rule. And next week we're gonna talk about episode three, the profligate.

SPEAKER_08

What does that word mean?

SPEAKER_16

Uh I believe it's I've looked up exactly, but I mean it essentially means a licentious person, like someone who engages in immoral behavior. But I'd have to either recklessly extravagant and wasteful in resources or licentious and immoral. Yeah, there we go. Marion Webster.

SPEAKER_08

So it's someone outside of their pure clan. That's what they're saying.

SPEAKER_16

Uh and they feel that lives a decadent lifestyle in a way that you shouldn't. So it's used by groups that are more aesthetic, like the Legion.

SPEAKER_08

And they say it about she said it about Lucy, right? Right. Well, because everyone who is a Legion is a profligate.

SPEAKER_16

Anyone who isn't Legion is a profligate. Or degenerate, you know, degenerates like you belong on a cross. Yeah. Well, thanks so much for listening, y'all. We'll see you next week. And back to you, Andrew, for the Fallout feed.

SPEAKER_08

All right. Is there anything else you guys would like to bring up on the Fallout feed this evening? I do have one shout. I'd like to say very happy birthday to our good buddy Solior. Scorecation! Happy birthday, buddy. Hope it was a great one. You guys have anything else you'd like to bring up tonight?

SPEAKER_16

Nah, I'm good. But I gotta tell you, this week in Buffalo, it was like, and I know some of the people had this too with the air quality, but Wednesday and Thursday, someone walked in and they put the New Vegas amber filter on the world. Like Buffalo and Toronto, I saw pictures from even more so, but Buffalo, we were so orange here because people know we're right near Toronto.

SPEAKER_05

Oak in the sky, yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. I was I was at work and I'm looking through my my office window. Like, why is it so yellow outside? And it was just like the shun, sunshine, not bright, but yellow.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

If you've ever seen uh Sherry's sandstorm pictures at Melbourne when she was there, it was just like it literally looks like an apocalypse on Mars, you know, like here. The the movie Total Recall has that sort of feel. Yeah. The sun, someone posted in the group this morning. This the ominous sun, like the smoke is making like all of our celestial bodies look look really creepy and movie-esque.

SPEAKER_01

Really does.

SPEAKER_08

I haven't seen anything in down here yet, but I believe Jerry mentioned he's already getting a smoky smell uh yesterday, and today was supposed to the air quality alert was actually gonna go up.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, the fires are on the way over to Alberta this time. They're a little bit west of most of Ontario. Last year, the ones that were hitting us hard were closer to Montreal. I mean north in in Quebec, though. So they're a little bit further west, but that's where the wind goes. So we often get it, you know. And of course, people in Canada, I really, I mean, I hope they get them under control. I hope everybody's okay. People losing land, a lot of firefighting happening, much more important than our air quality. Uh, but I did think the whole, the whole New Vegas filter. I saw it, I'm like, yeah, this is absolutely an Amber filter.

SPEAKER_08

All right. I think that will do it, you guys. Thanks for tuning in, everybody up there in Canada and surrounding area. Be safe with the fires. So, in that case, I will let you know you can find Jess and all of her many projects over there at Sleepis4T. Thank you so much, Jess.
